The unusual discovery was made at a playground in the Wilmersdorf district. According to German media reports citing a statement by Berlin police, the child noticed valuable items buried in the ground while playing.
“Instead of sandbox toys, silver coins, gold jewelry, luxury watches and 6,000 euros in cash were suddenly discovered behind a playground in Wilmersdorf,” Berlin police said in a statement.
According to law enforcement officials, some of the items had been buried in the ground beneath bushes.
After the valuables were discovered, kindergarten staff contacted the authorities. Police seized the items and launched an investigation into their origin. The owner of the hidden stash has not yet been identified.
Earlier, ancient Celtic gold coins estimated to be around 2,000 years old were discovered in the German state of Brandenburg near Berlin.
