Adelaide mum’s $10k housewarming surprise

A single mum was left shocked by the generosity of strangers when she bought her first home.

A young mum was left “absolutely shocked” after receiving the keys to her first home in Adelaide.

In the ultimate act of kindness, the inner-east property’s sellers gifted the 25-year-old single mum and first-time buyer a lot of their furniture and $10,000.

The life-changing generosity comes 18 months after the young mum, who wished to remain anonymous, escaped a domestic violence relationship with her then four-and-a-half-month-old daughter.

She locked away just $5000, the only money she had, and wasted no time building it up.

Six months post-partum she returned to work then scaled up to full-time while living with her parents.

The young mum saved hard to build her deposit.

Sacrificing and budgeting, she saved a $35,000 deposit.

A trip to the hospital for a burn her daughter had sustained the night before Mother’s Day threatened to ruin her chance of securing her dream unit.

Despite leaving the hospital at 1am, she attended the home’s open inspection the next morning.

“I had nothing left in me but I knew I needed to go look at this unit – I walked in with my mum and we knew it was perfect straight away: the open plan, nice view, it was small, compact but felt open,” she said.

“Every other place I kept finding the faults, this place I kept seeing the positives.”

Ray White sales agent Linda Clemente, with team members Oliver Bishop and Anita DeSciscio, shared the mother’s story with the sellers.

Moved and inspired by her story, the sellers first surprised the young mum with a morning tea before settlement to let her know the home would come partially furnished, with them leaving behind a TV unit, fully equipped kitchen, a fridge and furniture to help get her started.

Then at a final meeting on settlement day, the sellers offered a card with $10,000 cheque to the young mum, who had a gift of her own – some freshly baked sourdough and a homemade card from her daughter.

“It absolutely shocked me,” the young mum said.

“I showed my mum and she burst into tears. I was in shock the rest of the day and realistically am still in shock to this day.

“I have put the money into a savings account as a safety net … if an emergency happens, I have back up. I want to use it wisely.

“It’s been a massive journey to get here, but I’m so excited to finally have my own place, and my daughter and I are absolutely loving it.”

The young mum was grateful for the support of Ms Clemente and her team, as well as Nicolle Steinert and her broker assistant Sharlene Vears from Mortgage Choice.

Ms Clemente said the story was proof real estate is about more than just numbers and sale prices – it is about people.

“When you hear a story of such immense strength and devotion as this young mother’s, it moves you to your core,” she said.

“Witnessing the pure, unconditional kindness of the seller – giving a young family not just a roof but a massive financial safety net – is a moment I will cherish for the rest of my career.”
