BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – The Magic City is known for its ties to iron and steel production and a new exhibit is putting that legacy under the microscope – literally!
Believe it or not, the objects people see each and everyday could be considered art under the right lens.
Raymond Thompson with the local engineering company Vista Engineering gave WBRC an up-close look at a new exhibit they plan to open at Sloss Furnaces this Memorial Day Weekend.
It is called the Symphony of Elements: The Art and Science of Metals.
It is both art based and science based and showcases microscopic images of different metals.
In addition to vivid colors and intriguing designs, the images can help experts identify the weaknesses and strengths of these materials.
Thompson stressed this provides educational opportunities for all ages, especially kids interested in a career in STEM.
“In education, we always talk about STEM programs: Science, Technology, Engineering, Math,” Thompson shared. “Getting young children and all the way through middle school and high school age. Hey, I still consider myself a child when I look at this stuff. I enjoy and play with it and see something new all the time. Having that kind of excitement about nature and about science I think is important.”
This exhibit opens this weekend and runs through August. Thompson said it is completely free.
