Study projects up to $40.6B in increased economic output from LA28

An economic analysis conducted by the L.A. County Economic Development Corp. revealed that the 2028 L.A. Games will deliver up to $40.6B in “increased economic output” and add “as many as 224,000 jobs,” according to a front-page piece by James Rainey of the L.A. TIMES. One scenario placed the increased economic output at $20.5B to $25.4B, while the other predicted increased output at roughly $35.4B to $40.6B. Those estimates “include the run-up to the Games over the next two years.” The report, which came at the request of LA28, “doesn’t attempt to measure what sort of economic impact would follow in the months and years after the Olympics conclude.” An economic forecast by a think tank before the 2024 Games projected that the Paris Olympics would generate up to $12.8B in net economic benefits. But government auditors concluded in 2025 that the Olympics injected a more modest $2.3B into the economy, an “almost negligible increase in the nation’s gross domestic product.” Organizers said that the L.A. Games “promise to provide a much bigger stimulus, with lower economic risk, because most of the facilities needed to host the event are already in place.” They also have reported that ticket sales and sponsorship revenue “have exceeded projections” (L.A. TIMES, 9/15).
