Beyond ETF Flows and Rates: What’s Powering Bitcoin’s 40% Rally

Beyond ETF Flows and Rates: What's Powering Bitcoin's 40% Rally

Bitcoin has climbed roughly 40% since dipping below $60,000 in July — a rebound delivered against a backdrop of negative news, including Congress’s failure to advance the Clarity Act and the absence of a clearer regulatory framework for crypto markets.

ETF inflows are the most obvious explanation. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs absorbed $2.39 billion in a single week, the strongest weekly haul since October 2025, and the funds actually buy and hold the coins, giving that story real substance. Yet the cause-and-effect is unclear: are inflows lifting the price, or is a rising price drawing in inflows? Beyond money flows and interest rates, three other narratives help explain the climb — none of them airtight.

The ‘digital gold’ thesis is back. Investors increasingly treat Bitcoin as a hedge against inflation and geopolitical uncertainty, and its correlation with gold recently hit a six-year high. With macro uncertainty and geopolitical tensions mounting, the case for a haven asset is easy to make. But the explanation is incomplete: for most of the year, Bitcoin has behaved like a high-beta tech stock — a risk asset in the first half, gold in the second. The two personas are hard to square.

A bond-market feedback loop may be at work. Recent buybacks of long-dated U.S. Treasuries, replacing longer-term debt with shorter-term paper, would lower interest rates and reduce the government’s borrowing costs. Cheaper money, in turn, makes risk assets like Bitcoin more attractive to investors chasing higher returns. But the Federal Reserve has just announced plans to raise rates, and the 10-year Treasury yield has pushed toward the 5% mark, a level that has triggered warnings. That logic alone doesn’t close the case.

Then there is the ‘future of money’ story. With tensions simmering in the Middle East, cracks are showing in the dollar-based global financial system, and hedge fund managers keep discussing the possibility of replacing the dollar as the world’s reserve currency — a conversation Bitcoin has entered. Bitcoin, after all, is more than a digital currency; it is a financial innovation powered by blockchain technology. That may explain why it keeps climbing even without an obvious catalyst.

Taken together, haven demand, the bond-market echo, and reserve-currency ambition form the current rally’s three narrative pillars — each with loose ends. The headwinds remain: further Fed hikes would lift Treasury yields and drag Bitcoin lower, while regulatory inaction is likely to keep more institutional money on the sidelines. At roughly $84,000, Bitcoin still sits well below its record above $126,000, set on Oct. 6, 2025. Whether the rebound matures into a trend will hinge on the path of rates — and the path of regulation.
