Why a Single Bitcoin Allocation Beats Holding Multiple Altcoins | 2026 Analysis – News and Statistics

Some cryptocurrency investors may accumulate a portfolio containing numerous older tokens and altcoins that have not performed as anticipated, according to a report from Yahoo Finance. While diversification is common, the analysis suggests that concentrating on a single digital asset can be more profitable for many.

Bitcoin favored for concentrated holdings

The report argues that if an investor holds only one cryptocurrency, the evidence strongly supports selecting Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC). The primary case presented is that institutional research indicates adding Bitcoin can improve a portfolio’s performance without a major increase in risk.

Research on portfolio allocation

A study by Fidelity Digital Assets from March 25 examined the impact of adding Bitcoin to a traditional portfolio of stocks and bonds over a ten-year period. That research found that including a Bitcoin allocation of up to 10% resulted in a portfolio return of 24%. An allocation of 5% yielded annualized returns of 17.5%, while a portfolio with no Bitcoin had annualized returns of approximately 9.4%, though with slightly less volatility and a somewhat better maximum drawdown.

Additional research from BlackRock in late 2024 supports the concept that allocating 1% to 2% to Bitcoin can provide significant exposure to potential gains while keeping downside risk manageable. A separate investigation by Grayscale indicates that an allocation near 5% may be optimal for maximizing risk-adjusted returns.

Value proposition of Bitcoin

The analysis concludes that only a small allocation to Bitcoin is needed to meaningfully alter a portfolio’s return profile. This allows investors to gain desired exposure without the need to research or hold other cryptocurrencies, which are presented as lacking an equivalent value proposition.
