A serial burglar who used a tracked hire car to target Medway homes has been jailed.
Gavin Lawless admitted to five burglaries between 9 and 21 January 2026, at private properties in Rainham, Cliffe, Rochester and Gillingham.
Lawless smashed rear windows using stones or bricks before reaching inside to unlock the door. He then scoured each house and stole any jewellery and cash he came across.
For the first two offences, he was using a Jeep Avenger hired by an associate. Lawless was unaware the car had a tracking device installed by the company.
The 47 year old then used a Vauxhall Corsa to commit three further break-ins, all on 21 January. He was arrested later the same day in the Corsa and officers recovered stolen jewellery from inside the vehicle.
Investigators then managed to connect him to the earlier burglaries using the Jeep’s tracking data and reviewed CCTV footage that placed the Corsa at the later incidents. They also seized clothing from his home address in Fourth Avenue that matched that worn by the offender on the CCTV.
Lawless was charged and pleaded guilty to five counts of burglary at a Maidstone Crown Court hearing on 20 February. He was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison on Thursday 9 April.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Dan Bister said:
‘This man committed a series of crimes that left his victims feeling unsafe in their own homes. Burglary is a despicable offence and Lawless caused considerable damage before stealing items of emotional value to the victims. ‘His brazen crime spree ended abruptly, thanks to proactive policing and a thorough investigation. I hope those he targeted can move on now he is safely behind bars.’
