Avid coin collectors now have a new piece of Australian history to acquire with the launch of a tennis-themed collection.
Special $2 coloured coins have just been released to mark 120 years of the Australian Open during the first week of the tennis grand slam in Melbourne.
A total of four different collectable coins have been designed, all of which feature a coloured tennis ball as the centrepiece, along with ‘2025 Australian Open’ engraved on the face.
Two of the coins are each retailing for $12, one to mark the men’s draw with a male player mid-shot and another to mark the woman’s draw with a female player mid-shot.
The coins have been made available through the Royal Australian Mint and Australia Post websites, along with participating post offices.
Collectors then have a one in 10 chance of finding a further two coins with the same image of the players but with unique coloured tennis balls through coin-set folders.
Some of the coins will also be handed over as change when customers make cash purchases at Australia Post stores, up until February 16.
“We are proud to collaborate with Tennis Australia and the Royal Australian Mint to commemorate such a rich history of the much-loved sport with collectable coins,” Australia Post Executive General Manager Retail, Josh Bannister, said.
“Through this special release, tennis fans nationwide can start to share the excitement of Australian Open 2025.”
The Australian Open, the first grand slam of the calendar year, kicked-off on Sunday, and will run through until January 26.
“We are delighted to mark 120 years of the Australian Open with these collectable coins created in collaboration with Australia Post and the Royal Australian Mint,” Amanda Del Prete, Tennis Australia Director of Product and Customer Experience, said.
“Australians are avid sport and tennis fans and we know they will be excited to see these iconic coins in circulation as the AO main draw kicks off.”
