Julia Garner is all set to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Silver Surfer in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The actor is playing the female version of the villain. Her casting has left several fans confused. Amidst all the debate around the casting, the actress has finally broken her silence.

Julia Garner reveals she was also confused about playing a female Silver Surfer

Julia admitted that she was surprised Silver Surfer is a woman in The Fantastic Four. In an interview with Deadline, she opened up about meeting the film’s director, Matt Shakman. She told the outlet, “I was confused because I was like, ‘Wait, isn’t the Silver Surfer a man?’ I was just like, ‘Okay, well, I’ll play anything.’ I was a very big fan of Matt’s, so there was already, in my mind, like, ‘I should probably meet with Matt Shakman because he’s a very smart director and I love his work.’ And then he explained to me that it’s Shalla-Bal and that whole thing.”

Garner appears in the full-length trailer for First Steps. She arrives in the sky and tells the superhero team that their Earth has been chosen by the powerful Galactus for destruction. This was the closest look at her character.

Who is Shalla-Bal?

Typically, the Silver Surfer is Norrin Radd from Zenn-La, a utopian planet. Radd sacrifices himself to save his planet from Galactus. Shalla-Bal is portrayed as his beloved, who was left behind when he became Galactus’ reluctant herald. In the MCU, Shalla-Bal makes a deal with Galactus to protect her people.

About The Fantastic Four: First Steps

The official synopsis reads, “Set against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel Studios’ ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ introduces Marvel’s First Family—Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm/Human Torch and Ben Grimm/The Thing as they face their most daunting challenge yet.” The film is directed by Matt Shakman and produced by Kevin Feige. The cast list also includes Paul Walter Hauser, John Malkovich, Natasha Lyonne and Sarah Niles. The film will release in theatres on July 25, 2025.
