Olympian YAC recently contested the All-Ireland indoor track and field championships held in the TUS Athlone with great success. In total, nine athletes made the long trip to Athlone, and the club claimed a sensational two Championship Silver medals, four All Ireland top ten places, and a number of season’s bests (SB) and personal bests (PB).

Jumps – Ashton Forrester was in scintillating form in the U15 boys triple jump, showing great technical prowess and improved throughout the competition, jumping PB after PB. Ashton was rewarded with a sensational Silver medal where he jumped a massive PB of 10.34m.

Malachy Mullan finished in a fantastic 4th in the U18 boys High Jump in new PB jump of 1.65m and also took 6th place overall in the final of U18 Boys Triple Jump in brilliant new PB jump of 10.96m with 3 jumps all over his previous PB. Kellie Carty was unlucky not to make the top 8 in a highly competitive U16 girls triple jump with a 9.18m performance and 2nd best athlete from Ulster.

Middle Distance – Mouchine Fathoun, fresh from his emphatic victory in the u17 Boys 1500m at the Ulster Indoor Championships, had a much tighter race at these championships but nevertheless, still showed great guts and determination to claim a well deserved Silver All Ireland medal in a fantastic time of 4.05.53.

Throws – The club had 2 shot putters in action. Ciara McDaid competed in the U15 girl’s shot putt. Ciara finished 12th in a highly competitive competition with a throw of 8.76m. Orla McGeehin competed in the U12 Girls Shot Putt throwing a great series of throws where she got through to the Final of the competition, where she finished up in 6th place overall, topping it off with a new PB throw of 7.20m.

Sprints – In the U15 Girls 60m Briana Doherty finished 2nd in her Heat in a new PB time of 8.06secs. This performance got her automatically through to the Final where she finished 4th in 8.08secs, narrowly missing out on a bronze medal by the thickness of a vest in a dramatic dip finish, by only 0.03secs.

Bonnie Gillard was in action in the U19 Girls 60m, in her final year of the juvenile ages. Bonnie finished 6th in her heat and did a massive PB taking her previous best down from 8.49 to 8.26s. Aine strain finished 4th in her 200m heat in a time of 28.26s.

Massive congratulations to all athletes who competed, and as always we send a big thank you to all our club coaches and parents/guardians who made the long journey to Athlone to support all our athletes whose ongoing commitments and dedication to the club and athletes is what keeps the Olympian flame alight. This now brings the indoor season to a close and attention is now focused on the outdoor season in the coming weeks.

Donegal T&F Championship

Well done to all our juvenile U13-19 athletes who had a fantastic day at Lifford in the Donegal T&F Championships. From 19 athletes there was a great haul of medals (18 Gold, 11 Silver & 5 Bronze), brilliant performances all round and a great day was had by all who took part.

Thank you to all parents/guardians and coaches for travelling to the event to support our athletes and to all volunteer and officials for hosting a great event for all athletes taking part.
