An Olympic gold medalist has split with his mother because she disapproves of his Australian-raised girlfriend – and because she took some of his earnings, he claims.
Carlos Yulo’s mother reportedly ‘freaked out’ at him dating Chloe Anjeleigh San Jose, a model who was born in the Philippines but now conforms to an ‘Australian way of life’.
The Filipino athlete, 24, made history when he became his country’s first male gold medalist by winning the floor exercise and then boosted that with another gold in the vault.
Yulo will be showered with a luxury three-bedroom flat, around £740,000, and a lifetime supply of ramen among other rewards on his homecoming – but potentially no embrace from his mother.
‘My mother judged Chloe right away because of how she dressed and acted. Chloe and I grew up in different environments. Chloe grew up in Australia, and that’s the culture she knows. It’s very different from how we move, talk, and dress in the Philippines,’ Yulo said in a TikTok video, translated by Inquirer via the Hindustan Times.

‘Chloe has her own income. Everything you see her using and all her travels come from her hard work.
‘Ever since the beginning, she didn’t like Chloe, even though she hadn’t met or seen her in person. Our relationship worsened when I started setting boundaries. I stood up for Chloe because I like her.’
Chloe Anjeleigh has 900,000 TikTok followers and 117,000 on Instagram.
Often she will post photos and videos in bikinis, lingerie, and dresses – something Yulo’s mother finds distasteful.
Anjeleigh posts modelling content for Fashion Nova and one of her videos shows her trying on Valentine’s Day lingerie.
According to reports, Anjeleigh has pursued a career in nursing and she has also posted song covers on YouTube – including ballads directed at Yulo.
But showing Anjeleigh a cold shoulder is not the only thing that has riled Yulo. He also accuses her of receiving his prize money from the 2022 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.
‘My mother had access to my accounts and my monthly sports allowance. When I finally got control of my accounts, I found out that she had taken money out. I have statements that show all of her withdrawal,’ he said.

His mother has responded: ‘The money was given to me. As a mother, I was worried that my child might have financial problems in the future. So I invested it under my name.’
Yulo stated that he has forgiven his mother, but it is unclear if that will lead to any reconciliation.
Meanwhile, his mother, Anjelica, has apologised for any stormy words that have been exchanged – but only after his Olympic triumphs.
‘Son, I am sorry. I understand some may think I’m only speaking now because of your success,’ she said.
‘I ask for your forgiveness as a concerned mother. You are mature enough to make your own decisions. Our door is always open, regardless of your financial status. I can’t take back my words, but your father and I are ready to talk with understanding whenever you’re ready to come home and resolve this.’
In terms of the rewards Yulo will receive, he is due £480,000 from private real-estate company Megaworld as well as a three-bed condo in a luxury apartment block housing other athletes.
