Olympics LIVE: Matt Hudson-Smith just misses out on gold in 400m final after Team GB win cycling bronze

Matt Hudson-Smith spoke to the BBC shortly after taking his silver in the 400m final.

The 29-year-old says that “sometimes the journey is better than the outcome”, adding that it’s “been a hell of a journey and I’m grateful”.

“Olympic silver, not many can say that,” he adds.

“I saw my family, I didn’t even know they were here! Bit of a shocker really, I hate them watching me!

“It’s been a hell of a journey. We knew it would come down from the 50, he had another gear, I hit it a little bit too late. But this is just the start, my time is going to come.

“ I thought I’d cleared the field, I knew someone was going to come but I wasnt trying to ease up and he got me on the line. It happens.

“It’s been crazy, I’ve just got to keep building on it.”

The women’s pole vault final has finished too now, with Nina Kennedy of Australia taking gold with a height of 4.90m.

The USA’s Katie Moon takes silver, with Canada’s Alysha Newman getting bronze.

The men’s discus competition has finished now, and Jamaica’s Rojé Stona taking gold with a new Olympic record of 70m.

Lithuania’s Mykolas Alekna comes in second, with Australia’s Matthew Denny taking bronze.

We’re still seeing some competition at the Stade de France, with the men’s discus and women’s pole vault finals still yet to be decided.

Jamaica’s Rojé Stona is leading the former, with a distance of 70m, while Australia’s Nina Kennedy is leading the pole vault competition having cleared 4.9m.

He’ll eventually be proud of the silver medal of course, but it’s heartbreak for Matt Hudson-Smith. He must have been in the lead at 390, maybe even 395 metres!

He’s run a European record of 43.44s tonight.

There’s a smile on the face of the 29-year-old, and we’ve had a real showing of the pure emotion and desire of the Olympics there.

Richards is in front early and around the bend, but Hudson-Smith blazes into the lead as they go down the straight!

The Brit briefly looks to be pulling away down the final 100m or so, but the USA’s Quincy Hall comes out of nowhere in one of the outside lanes! He overtakes the Brit with a handful of metres left!

Hudson-Smith takes silver, with Zambia’s Muzala Samukonga taking bronze.

Attention quickly turns to the men’s 400m final and Team GB’s main medal hope – Matthew Hudson-Smith.

The 29-year-old is the fastest man in the world over this distance in 2024, and he enters with high hopes of a medal – and perhaps even a gold.

Grenadian Kirani James is the only medallist remaining from Tokyo 2020 – he grabbed a bronze in Japan, having won gold in 2012.

Amber Anning ran 49.47s in that semi-final – only three athletes across the three semis were faster than her, the winner of each one. Bodes very well for the final itself, considering she eased off at the end once the top-two places were assured.

That’s a new personal best for Anning and a fine time to do so. Hopefully she can go one better next time out.

Meanwhile, Sada Williams finished with 49.89 so she and Norway’s Jaeger from SF1 will be through as best qualifiers – Lieke Klaver is out.
