Summary

  • Deadpool once became a Herald of Galactus, matching and nearly surpassing Silver Surfer’s cosmic strength.
  • The battle showed Deadpool’s god-tier power with the Power Cosmic, but Silver Surfer ultimately outmatched him.
  • Proving his potential as a god-like being, Deadpool faced Silver Surfer, leaving questions about other cosmic beings he could challenge if he kept the power for himself.

The omnipotent being known as Galactus has recruited multiple heralds in his never-ending quest to satisfy his insatiable hunger, with Silver Surfer being one of the most powerful harbingers to have ever served this almighty galactic god. But in a comic issue from over a decade ago, Deadpool, Marvel’s Merc with a Mouth, gets the chance to become Silver Surfer’s equal, showing what happens when Wade Wilson is given a proper power boost.

An incredibly versatile mutant whose mercenary skills allow him to expertly wield katanas just as effectively as firearms, Deadpool, on a good day, wouldn’t be able to touch the fabled Silver Surfer until, in 2011’s Deadpool Team-Up #883, Wade receives a major power upgrade courtesy of the Devourer of Worlds himself, Galactus.

Answering a “Help Wanted” ad in the newspaper, Deadpool is zapped into space to meet Galactus proper where he’s imbued with the Power Cosmic — officially turning Deadpool into a Herald of Galactus, complete with the mission of preparing planets for their eventual destruction!

Deadpool throws a giant fireball at Silver Surfer from space as Silver Surfer catches it

Receiving a sweet hot rod-esque surfboard, Deadpool goes about his job getting worlds ready for their imminent demise and eventually crosses paths with a former Herald of Galactus, the Silver Surfer. Deciding he can’t stand by watching Wade continue to abuse his power, Silver Surfer takes Deadpool to task, with his enormous energy blast barely overpowering Deadpool’s own, sending Wade hurtling to the planet below. Showing off his Power Cosmic next, Deadpool throws a city-sized fireball at Silver Surfer — a mind-blowingly powerful offensive move that Surfer sends right back at Wade, effectively ending the fight.

Still having enough power coursing through him to not be immediately incinerated by his own attack, it’s interesting to see Deadpool — if only for a moment — match Silver Surfer’s Power Cosmic with a blast that would have utterly decimated anyone else. Saying, “I have much more left if you would like to continue this confrontation. But I will assure you, I will prevail in the end,” Silver Surfer forces Deadpool to resign from his post, proving that while Deadpool was stronger than he’s ever been here, he still had nothing on Silver Surfer’s might, regardless of how hard he tried.

While Deadpool’s time acting as a Herald of Galactus and commanding the kind of power that matched and nearly exceeded the Silver Surfer’s cosmic strength was short-lived, there’s something to be said about Wade Wilson’s potential as a god-like being after seeing what he accomplished against a supposedly far superior foe. Deadpool getting a job working for Galactus proves he has the chops to take on the likes of Silver Surfer, with the only question remaining being what other nigh-omnipotent beings Wade could take on if he had kept the Power Cosmic for a little while longer.
