Online master’s degree programs in economics offer a flexible avenue and can sometimes be more affordable than on-campus programs. These programs dive deep into core economics concepts, including macroeconomics, or the study of large-scale and global economic forces; microeconomics, which studies how economic models like supply and demand apply to small businesses; and econometrics, which covers how economists analyze data to forecast trends.
Incoming students usually have completed some amount of undergraduate coursework in economics or mathematics and may already work in the field. Unlike business students, those pursuing economics usually have more coursework dedicated to understanding the social sciences, in addition to finance and markets.
Online economics master’s students can also elect to take courses in specialized areas of the subject, such as environment, health, international economics and machine learning.
Economics master’s programs help prepare graduates for careers in government and finance, or pursue further graduate studies, conduct research and teach at the postsecondary level. Many programs are offered exclusively online, which may be best suited for students who enjoy working with numbers and large datasets, and are motivated to complete virtual assignments and connect with professors and classmates asynchronously.
