After months of delay Umakant Dash, the director of Institute of Rural Management Anand has been appointed as the Vice Chancellor of Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics. A formal announcement of the same was made by Sanjeev Sanyal late Wednesday night.

The position of Vice Chancellor of GIPE had been vacant since Ajit Ranade’s resignation. At present Shankar Das is officiating as the vice chancellor of the institute. Over the last few months there have been many disputes within the Servants of India Society – the founding body of the institute and the GIPE. Allegations of misappropriation of funds have been made against the Servants of India Society – which the society had refuted. Milind Deshmukh, the secretary of the institute, had been arrested and later released on bail for his alleged role in the matter.

Prior to his appointment as the head at IRMA, Dash headed humanities and social sciences at IIT Chennai. He holds a PhD in applied economics from IIT Kanpur and has nearly two decades of experience in academics and research.
