AVON LAKE, Ohio — The former Avon Lake power plant will soon be for sale in the next step toward future redevelopment.

The Avon Lake Environmental Redevelopment Group has retained commercial real estate firm Avison Young to sell the 43-acre lakefront property, according to an announcement Thursday.

This comes just weeks after two of the plant’s boilers were imploded in a controlled explosion.

Once listed, the land will be available for mixed-use development as a part of the Avon Lake power plant and Redevelopment Initiative to provide access to the lakefront.

Avison Young plans to solicit proposals from prospective buyers, with a goal of entering a sale agreement sometime this year, the news release said.

The power plant closed since 2022, opening a rare opportunity to newly development a large piece of land in the Cleveland area along Lake Erie.. Some ideas for the property have included a new beach, amphitheater-style seating facing Lake Erie, offices and retail.

“This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to transform and develop 40 acres on Lake Erie,” Scott Reschly, president of the Avon Lake Environmental Redevelopment Group said in a statement.

“It supports national efforts to not just be better stewards of our environment, but to maximize the potential of our urban, suburban, and rural spaces.”

Don Lydon will represent the project in Avison Young’s Cleveland office, while Richard Shields and Judson Martin will represent it from the firm’s Chicago office, the release said.

Demolition and remediation activities are ongoing and are scheduled to be completed by mid-2025.
