Silver Price Outlook: Bank of America Warns of Industrial Demand Risks and Potential Surplus by 2026 – News and Statistics

Silver prices remain below $75 per ounce, and while a year-end move higher is possible, Bank of America has cautioned investors that the metal faces challenges from changing industrial demand, according to a Kitco News report.

In a recent precious metals note, Bank of America commodity analysts led by Michael Widmer expressed optimism that silver could reach $100 per ounce in the fourth quarter of this year, but they warned such gains would not be lasting. The analysts noted that a gold rally could lift silver above $100 per ounce in the near term, but they do not foresee sustained outperformance due to weakening fundamental demand.

Looking further ahead, the bank forecasts silver trading around $75 per ounce again by the second quarter of 2027. The analysts identified the primary obstacle as higher prices driving key industrial sectors to reduce silver usage or replace it with cheaper materials. They believe industrial demand for silver peaked in the prior year, partly because manufacturers are incentivized to economize on the metal. These pressures have been worsened by stagnant solar photovoltaic production in China and a possible drop in solar installations this year. Although demand is rising in other sectors, the analysts said those increases are insufficient to significantly lift overall industrial consumption.

The analysts added that rising silver prices could readily push the market into a surplus as industrial consumption declines. They stated that the silver deficit could shrink by 90% this year, with the 2026 deficit expected to be so minor that even modest investor sales could turn the market into a surplus. In this context, Bank of America anticipates silver will behave more like a precious metal than an industrial one, with investor demand becoming crucial for future price movements.

Silver has outperformed gold, supported by steady industrial demand that has driven a supply deficit now expected to extend into a sixth consecutive year. Gold, by contrast, has faced headwinds as an expensive monetary asset, with rising interest rates and expectations of another Federal Reserve rate hike by year-end increasing the opportunity cost of holding the non-yielding metal. The gold/silver ratio currently stands at 59.43 points, roughly in the middle of a months-long consolidation pattern.

The Bank of America team, while more cautious, noted that silver remains important in the solar sector and they do not foresee a sharp collapse in demand, despite price constraints. They also mentioned that the ongoing conflict in Iran continues to boost demand for green energy and alternatives to oil. The bank sees potential for high volatility due to pockets of illiquidity in the market. Silver prices rallied to $120 per ounce at the start of the year, partly as investors and industry competed for shrinking physical metal surpluses.

The analysts highlighted that the biggest risk is silver becoming entangled in potential trade negotiations involving the U.S., Canada, and Mexico as they revisit free trade in North America. America’s global trade war and tariff threats on silver have forced bullion banks and market participants to keep high inventories in the U.S., reducing metal available globally. Because Canada and Mexico are the largest silver suppliers to the U.S., uncertainty about these discussions contributed to silver pushing back above $80 per ounce. The analysts also noted that assets in physically backed ETFs continue to decline and that the latest CFTC data shows very limited interest in adding net long positions in futures.
