McDonald’s Japan has officially revealed a brand new Happy Set toy collaboration with the massively successful manga and anime series Chiikawa.
This announcement may cause some fans to have flashbacks to McDonald’s Japan’s last Chiikawa collab, which was abruptly cancelled after selling out almost immediately due to it being heavily targeted by scalpers.
The crossover arrives as the hit anime continues to enjoy immense global success, having secured an impressive third “Japan Character Award Grand Prix” in 2025.
The series is also preparing for the theatrical debut of Chiikawa The Movie: Secret of Mermaid Island, which is scheduled to premiere this coming July.
The new Chiikawa Happy Set toy lineup features eight unique 3D pencil topper figures depicting the series’ adorable characters dressed up in various official McDonald’s staff uniforms.
McDonald’s Japan has stated that the toys are designed to encourage children to think about the different roles within a restaurant environment and learn about the importance of teamwork.
The Chiikawa Happy Set pencil toppers will be distributed randomly across two specific waves:
- Wave 1 (May 15 – May 28)
- Chiikawa (Manager)
- Hachiware (Delivery Crew)
- Kurimanju (McCafé by Barista)
- Wave 2 (May 29 – June 11)
- Usagi (Crew)
- Momonga (Hospitality Leader)
This latest campaign follows significant public controversy regarding a previous collab held in May 2025, where aggressive reselling and high demand led to extreme food waste.
During that chaotic period, scalpers abandoned large quantities of uneaten meals inside and outside of store locations, leaving full food trays in garbage bins simply to sell the exclusive toys on auction websites at massive markups.
In direct response to these issues, McDonald’s has explicitly stated that the company does not tolerate the abandonment or waste of food.
To actively combat this problem, strict new purchase restrictions have been implemented specifically to prevent bulk buying for resale and to avoid widespread food abandonment.
The company has also declared that purchases made for resale or any other profit purposes are strictly prohibited.
On the first day of each release wave, specifically Friday, May 15, and Friday, May 29, customers must present a digital purchasing ticket obtained exclusively via the official McDonald’s app.
On these dates, purchases of breakfast and regular menus will be strictly limited to four sets per customer.
For the remainder of the promotional periods, tickets will not be required, but orders will be capped at four sets per group per transaction.
Fans should also note that it is not possible to choose the type of toy that will be received, and these special collaborative meals will not be available through delivery services.
The new Chiikawa Happy Sets will officially launch at McDonald’s locations nationwide across Japan on Friday, May 15.
