$20B In Cryptocurrency Transfers During World Cup Examined In New Report

Chainalysis has indicated that the 2026 FIFA World Cup stood out not only for record attendance of 6.8 million spectators, $10.5 billion in advertising revenue, and 66 million U.S. television viewers for the final, but also for unprecedented blockchain activity. According to blockchain analytics research, the tournament drove roughly $20 billion in prediction market trading volume starting from January 2026, alongside $24 million in digital collectible transactions that began in May 2025.

Chainalysis also pointed out that nearly 400,000 wallets engaged with on-chain prediction platforms, producing $5.7 billion in volume during the five-week competition itself.

Betting interest focused heavily on match results and group standings, yet niche questions also drew substantial capital.

One notable market centered on whether Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo would shed tears at the conclusion of his final campaign; that question alone attracted $49 million in wagers.

Overall, 55 percent of participants finished in profit, and 79 percent of those winners were seasoned prediction market users.

World Cup-related markets accounted for about 63 percent of all prediction market activity while the tournament ran.

Daily volumes hovered near $50 million in the months leading up to the event, occasionally exceeding $100 million, then climbed to the $250 million range once matches began and surpassed $300 million on the day Spain defeated Argentina in the final.

Activity spanned the globe. The United States and China generated the highest volumes, followed by Canada, Thailand, and the United Kingdom.

While the overwhelming majority of participants appeared to be ordinary fans, a small fraction of wallets carried prior links to problematic sources.

Fewer than 1 percent of the roughly 400,000 wallets involved—about 3,700 addresses—showed such connections.

The largest single contribution came from the sanctioned exchange Huobi/HTX, which channeled at least $5.4 million into betting wallets.

Additional exposure included approximately $2 million tied to scam-related addresses, more than $800,000 connected to stolen funds, and around $500,000 linked to over-the-counter desks.

Parallel to the betting surge, FIFA launched its official “FIFA Collect” platform on the Avalanche blockchain.

Fans purchased digital collectibles commemorating players and memorable moments; these assets could later be redeemed for actual match tickets or traded on secondary markets. More than 100,000 supporters obtained tickets this way.

Analysis of the platform’s smart contracts identified a central wallet that processed $24 million in payments between May 2025 and the tournament’s close.

After deducting FIFA’s 5 percent fee, the organization appears to have realized at least $6 million from secondary sales.

Most of the capital originated in countries that qualified for the World Cup ($17.6 million) rather than non-qualifying nations ($6.6 million).

The majority of funds came from wallets already active on-chain, and participants showed greater interest in trading than simply holding assets.Strict know-your-customer requirements on FIFA Collect kept illicit exposure extremely low.

Users had to verify identities and declare funding sources, with profiles undergoing manual review—measures that discouraged bad actors.

In contrast, open prediction markets demonstrated both the reach of decentralized platforms and the need for robust monitoring tools.

Together, the massive prediction market volumes and the more controlled collectibles experiment illustrate crypto’s growing presence in major global events.

Open systems enable broad participation, while strong compliance controls limit unwanted activity. Chainalysis has now concluded that as more everyday financial activity migrates on-chain, the capacity to trace and evaluate these flows will become increasingly essential.
