BTC Plunge Triggers Altcoin Sell-off as ADA Bucks the Trend

Bitcoin’s July Rally Collapses Into $62K Slump

After teasing double-digit gains for much of late July, bitcoin closed the month up a modest 4.5%, doing little to erase year-to-date losses that sat near 30% by Aug. 2. Although the last days of July lived up to their billing as the most eventful of the year, a sudden July 31 slump pulled prices down to $62,236 after starting the day above $65,000.

The nearly $3,000 wipeout on this day dragged bitcoin’s market capitalization from just over $1.3 trillion to $1.26 trillion, underlining the volatility of a week in which the Federal Open Market Committee voted to keep interest rates unchanged. While bitcoin maximalists still project a surge in the second half of 2026, prospects of the cryptocurrency returning to levels not seen since January, when it nearly reclaimed $100,000, are dimming, especially with the U.S. Senate seemingly unable to reach a compromise on the CLARITY Act.

Furthermore, unresolved fighting in the Middle East, which appeared to widen after Saudi Arabia launched strikes on Yemen and drones hit Egyptian infrastructure, also remains a key issue dampening hopes for a bitcoin recovery.

Meanwhile, as is typical, bitcoin’s price action during the week was mirrored across the broader cryptocurrency market. Except for a few coins, most high-cap altcoins logged losses ranging from 2% to 3% over seven days. Ethereum (ETH), which was on the cusp of breaching the $2,000 mark on July 27, closed the week down 2.6%, trading at just over $1,860.

Senate Recess and Security Concerns Cloud Outlook

XRP, which struggled to test the $1.20 resistance level in July, fell nearly 2%, while Solana ended the week down 2.7%. HYPE, one of the handful of high-cap altcoins with positive gains over the past three months and more than 100% gains year to date, logged the largest decline, dropping 12%. RAIN was another high-cap coin with double-digit losses during the week.

BNB and ADA were two high-cap altcoins with notable gains, rising 2.4% and 15.3%, respectively. UNI, which climbed 8.6%, also saw gains, as did PUMP (16%) and BEAT (7.2%).

Because an overwhelming majority of altcoins saw red, the total altcoin market cap dropped from nearly $1.02 trillion to $964 billion. This, combined with bitcoin’s weekly slide of 2.5%, meant the crypto economy’s aggregate market capitalization tumbled from its July 27 peak of nearly $2.33 trillion to $2.22 trillion on Aug. 2.

As the Senate recess nears, some crypto industry participants remain optimistic that the CLARITY Act will pass before lawmakers leave. Passage of the bill is seen as a potential catalyst for bitcoin and the broader crypto market. However, unexpected events, including security concerns from recent Coldcard hacks and ongoing Middle East tensions, will continue to weigh on bitcoin, making even modest end-of-year price projections difficult to achieve.
