Economics Arkansas Endorses AP Business with Personal Finance as a High-Quality Option for Financial Literacy Education

Leading state nonprofit recognizes new AP course aligned with national standards for personal finance education

LITTLE ROCK, Ark., August 25, 2026–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Economics Arkansas announced its endorsement of the Advanced Placement (AP) Business with Personal Finance course. The organization is advocating for the course to be recognized as a pathway for Arkansas students to fulfill the state’s personal financial literacy graduation requirement.

Arkansas is one of several states involved in this national initiative, which is supported by the Council for Economic Education (CEE) and the College Board. Formally recognizing the course would raise academic standards, expand student access to high-quality financial literacy education and better prepare Arkansas graduates for financial life after high school.

“Every Arkansas student deserves to graduate with the financial knowledge and skills to navigate adult life successfully,” said Kathleen Lawson, executive director of Economics Arkansas. “AP Business with Personal Finance is designed to equip generations with the tools needed to become financially savvy at a college level of rigor. Recognizing this course is the right move for students, for districts and for Arkansas.”

Economics Arkansas is the state’s leading nonprofit dedicated to advancing economic and financial literacy education. The organization supports the nationally recognized Standards for Personal Financial Education, developed in partnership with CEE and the Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy. Those standards outline what students need to know to make sound financial decisions, covering budgeting, saving, credit, investing, risk management and long-term financial planning.

AP Business with Personal Finance meets that high national benchmark. The full-year course pairs personal finance with broader business and economic concepts, allowing students to build practical application skills. Rather than simple exposure to financial topics, it requires students to show mastery through coursework and a college-level AP exam.

Economics Arkansas’ endorsement rests on three main pillars:

  • Standards-based integrity. AP Business with Personal Finance fully addresses the competencies outlined in the CEE and Jump$tart standards, making it a substitute for a standalone personal finance requirement, not a shortcut around one.

  • Meaningful learning experiences. The course allows students to meet the Arkansas graduation requirement through a college-level experience with an external assessment. It doesn’t lower the bar; it raises it.

  • Financial education for all students. Expanding the pathways through which students can meet the personal finance requirement gives districts, especially those with limited course offerings, greater flexibility to deliver high-quality financial education within existing programs. No student should miss out on essential financial skills because of where they live or what their school can offer.

As one of the early states embracing this new Advanced Placement offering, Arkansas has an opportunity to continue demonstrating leadership in financial literacy education by expanding access to nationally aligned learning opportunities that prepare students for success beyond high school.
