Fiona sets W65 World Record amid Scottish medals at British Masters

A strong Scottish cohort of around 30 athletes headed for Derby at the weekend for the British Masters Athletics Championships.

And the group duly ended their season on a high, coming home with 24 gold, 7 silver and 10 bronze medals as well as multiple finalists just missing out on the podium.

The success stretched to the record books with W65 Fiona Matheson breaking the World Record for 3000m in that age category.

The Falkirk Victoria Harriers athlete clocked 11:19.24 (to beat the mark of 11:19.82 set by French athlete Maryse Le Gallo. Many congratulations!

On the men’s side, following on from their successes in Daegu, Robert McHarg (M60) took gold in the 400m, 800m and 1500m, and Dougie Graham (M45) won gold in the Pole Vault. 

Nicky Cowan (M35) was also on form, winning gold in the M35 100m and bronze in the 200m. The M70 category saw success in the field events with Jim Hogg claiming gold in both the Discus and Shot, and Robert Stevenson winning gold in the Long Jump and Triple Jump.

In the women’s events, throwers Claire Cameron (W65) and Susan Jones (W60) took multiple medals with Claire winning gold in the Discus and silver in the Shot, and Susan winning gold in the Hammer, Javelin and Weight Throw as well as silver in the Shot and bronze in the Discus.

On the track, Fiona Matheson (W65) took gold in both the 3000m and 5000m, and Jane Ariztegieta Scott (W45) won gold in both the 80m Hurdles and 400m Hurdles.

In doing so, Jane broke a 21-year old Scottish record in the sprint hurdles and a 32-year-old record in the 400m Hurdles!

Susan Jones (W60) – Hammer Gold, Weight Throw Gold, Javelin Gold, Shot Silver, Discus Bronze

Mary Western (W60, PH Racing Club) – 800m Bronze

Claire Cameron (W65, VPCOG AC) – Discus Gold, Shot Silver
