Quantum Computing Threat to Bitcoin: Google Warns of Accelerated Timeline – News and Statistics

According to a recent white paper from Google‘s Quantum AI research team, the cryptographic security protecting Bitcoin wallets faces a potential future threat from quantum computers. The research indicates such machines could require significantly fewer resources to break the encryption than prior estimates suggested and might emerge sooner than anticipated by the market.

The analysis posits that a quantum computer using a refined attack method could theoretically compromise Bitcoin’s encryption in approximately nine minutes. This timeframe is notable as Bitcoin’s network settles a new block every ten minutes, creating a window where an attacker could potentially intercept and reroute transactions. Such an event could trigger a severe market reaction.

In response, the Bitcoin developer community is formally evaluating a preparatory measure known as Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 360. This proposal aims to address a vulnerability introduced by a past upgrade, making a quantum attack slightly more difficult to execute. However, it is not a complete solution and does not replace the vulnerable cryptographic elements with quantum-resistant alternatives.

A full transition to post-quantum cryptography would require developing, evaluating, and implementing further proposals, a process contingent on achieving broad consensus among key network participants. One developer involved estimated the entire transition could take roughly seven years to complete.

Meanwhile, another cryptocurrency, Zcash, which shares supply characteristics with Bitcoin, is reported to be more advanced in its preparations for this quantum computing threat.
