Gold dips as post-Fed dollar strength weighs, with support levels tested and consolidation in focus

Gold slipped more than 0.6% on Monday after last week’s 25 bps Federal Reserve rate rise, with XAU/USD at $4,350 after an intraday peak near $4,383. The US Dollar Index rose 0.2% to 100.42 even as US Treasury yields eased later in the session, and bullion failed to gain traction despite its usual inverse relationship with yields. Oil prices fell on expectations of US–Iran diplomatic progress ahead of the UN General Assembly, while money markets still priced at least 33 basis points of additional tightening by year-end; the calendar includes the ADP Employment Change four-week average, Fed speakers and S&P Global Flash PMIs.

Technicals pointed to consolidation with a mild downside bias, as the RSI turned bearish and the sequence of lower highs and lower lows remained in place. First support sat at $4,322, then the 100-day SMA at $4,319 and the 50-day at $4,295, with $4,000 as the next demand zone if those levels give way. A daily close back above $4,400 would refocus attention on $4,400–$4,500, and further strength would bring the 200-day SMA at $4,541 into view. Central banks remain the largest holders, having added 1,136 tonnes worth about $70 billion in 2022, the highest annual purchase on record.

Short-Term Strategies and Fed Impact

We suggest that derivative traders look to position for short-term downside or consolidation in gold as the hawkish Federal Reserve limits near-term gains. Following the recent 25 basis point interest rate hike and a stronger US Dollar Index at 100.42, the immediate upward momentum for the yellow metal has stalled. Historically, when the US Dollar Index holds above the 100 mark, gold prices face strong headwinds, often seeing corrections of 3% to 5% in the weeks following a hawkish central bank pivot.

With the Relative Strength Index turning bearish and pointing downward, we believe selling call options above the $4,400 resistance level represents a high-probability strategy. Alternatively, short-term traders can buy put options targeting the immediate daily support level of $4,322 and the 100-day Simple Moving Average at $4,319. If these key levels fail to hold, historical market structures suggest a deeper slide toward the 50-day Simple Moving Average near $4,295 is highly likely.

Macro Factors and Long-Term Gold Demand

We must also monitor the oil markets, where prices are falling due to potential diplomatic breakthroughs between the US and Iran. Falling energy prices could temporarily cool short-term inflation expectations, giving the Fed more room to hike rates by the 33 basis points already priced in by money markets for the end of the year. This macro environment traditionally strengthens the greenback and keeps steady pressure on non-yielding assets like bullion.

Despite the short-term bearish outlook, we advise against aggressive, long-term short positions because of robust underlying demand. Data from the World Gold Council shows central banks purchased over 1,000 tonnes of gold annually in recent years to diversify reserves, which acts as a strong structural floor for the metal. Therefore, we should view any sharp dip toward the $4,000 mark as a prime buying opportunity for longer-dated bullish options.
