Kitco NewsWire noted that spot gold remained largely unchanged while spot silver advanced after Thursday’s closing bell, as falling crude oil prices and declining Treasury yields counterbalanced a firmer U.S. dollar. At the time of writing, spot gold was quoted near $4,542.40 per ounce, a marginal 0.04% dip, and spot silver was around $76.655 per ounce, gaining 1.03% for the session.

Initial jobless claims dropped by 3,000 to 209,000 for the week ended May 16, with the prior week’s figure revised upward to 212,000. April housing starts decreased 2.8% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.465 million, while building permits climbed 5.8% to 1.442 million. The Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index plunged to -0.4 in May from 26.7 in April. Flash U.S. manufacturing PMI rose to 55.3, services PMI edged down to 50.9, and the composite PMI remained unchanged at 51.7. This mixed data created an uneven rate signal: labor conditions stayed robust, housing starts weakened, permits improved, and regional factory activity stalled.

The Strait of Hormuz continues to serve as the primary geopolitical conduit affecting oil, interest rates, and precious metals, but Thursday’s trading was characterized by a partial reduction in risk premiums. U.S.-Iran negotiations were described as progressing toward a potential agreement, though Iran’s uranium stockpile and Tehran’s stance on a possible toll system in the strait remain sticking points. President Donald Trump has asserted that the Strait of Hormuz should remain an international waterway free of tolls. The current market environment is less favorable for gold from a safe-haven standpoint but more supportive through lower oil prices and yields.

Across other asset classes, the most notable effects included reduced energy prices, weaker energy equities, stronger broad equities, and a diminished inflation impulse. U.S. stock markets closed higher following the latest downturn in crude. The S&P 500 advanced 0.2% to 7,445.72, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.6% to 50,285.66, and the Nasdaq Composite added 0.1% to 26,293.10. The Russell 2000 increased 0.9% to 2,843.45. These gains came after Brent crude dropped from roughly $109 in the morning to settle below $103, which helped bond yields decline and allowed major indices to recover from early losses.

In key external markets, Nymex WTI crude oil prices were lower, settling around $96.35 per barrel, while Brent crude settled near $102.58. The U.S. dollar index was stronger. The yield on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note was trading around the 4.6% level.

From a technical perspective, spot gold bulls have their next upside price target of pushing prices back above the $4,550 to $4,600 resistance zone, with a sustained move aiming for $4,660 and then $4,680. Bears have their next near-term downside price target of a break below $4,489.30, with deeper downside objectives at $4,470 and then $4,370. Initial resistance is seen at $4,550 and then at $4,600. Initial support is seen at $4,530 and then at $4,489.30.

For spot silver, bulls have their next upside price target of driving prices back above the $77.24 to $78.00 area, with a move above that zone targeting $79.00 and then $85.00. The next downside price target for the bears is a break below $76.14, with deeper downside objectives at $75.19 and then $74.63. Initial resistance is seen at $77.24 and then at $78.00. Next support is seen at $76.14 and then at $75.19.
