Galaxy Digital opens $5M fund for Bitcoin quantum security research

Galaxy Digital has established a $5 million initiative to fund Bitcoin developers working on technologies designed to prepare the network for future quantum computing risks.

Summary

  • Galaxy Digital has launched a $5 million fund to support Bitcoin developers working on quantum resistant security solutions.
  • The initiative will finance research into new signature schemes, wallet migration tools and security audits for Bitcoin.
  • Galaxy said early preparation is needed because upgrading Bitcoin’s cryptography could take years of coordination across the ecosystem.

According to Galaxy Digital, applications have opened for its new Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative, a grant program that will support developers building quantum-resistant signature schemes, wallet migration tools and security audits.

Today we’re launching the Galaxy Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative.

The company said it also wants other institutions to contribute funding and research so work on Bitcoin’s transition to post-quantum cryptography can move forward through industry collaboration.

The initiative comes as governments, technology companies and researchers continue preparing for advances in quantum computing, even though most experts do not expect current machines to threaten Bitcoin’s cryptography in the immediate future.

Funding under the program will focus on infrastructure that could help the Bitcoin ecosystem adapt if quantum computers eventually become capable of breaking today’s cryptographic standards. Galaxy said research into new signature algorithms, practical wallet migration methods and independent security reviews are among its immediate priorities.

CryptoQuant research, cited by Galaxy, estimates that roughly 6.9 million Bitcoin could become exposed if sufficiently powerful quantum computers were able to crack Bitcoin’s existing cryptographic protections. Based on current market prices, Galaxy said the potentially vulnerable holdings would be worth about $461 billion.

Although the industry widely considers such a scenario to be years away, researchers have argued that technical preparation cannot wait until quantum computers become commercially capable. According to Galaxy, introducing post-quantum cryptography into Bitcoin would likely require years of coordination across core developers, wallet providers, exchanges, infrastructure companies and users, making early research necessary.

Preparing Bitcoin before the technology arrives

Bitcoin currently relies on cryptographic techniques that conventional computers cannot practically break. Quantum computing, however, follows a different computing model that could eventually solve some mathematical problems far more efficiently than today’s machines.

While commercially viable quantum computers capable of attacking Bitcoin do not yet exist, governments have increased investment in both quantum hardware and defensive technologies.

In the United States, President Donald Trump recently signed executive orders directing federal agencies to accelerate development of large-scale quantum computing while also strengthening protection of government systems against quantum-based attacks. Separately, the U.S. Commerce Department signed letters of intent worth more than $2 billion with nine quantum computing companies working on advanced machines that could eventually challenge the cryptography securing cryptocurrencies and much of today’s internet infrastructure.

Against that backdrop, Galaxy said its initiative is intended to help developers begin solving practical migration challenges before the technology reaches that stage.

The company said it hopes participation will extend beyond its own funding, encouraging universities, companies and other organizations to contribute technical expertise and financial support for open-source development.

Researchers across the Bitcoin ecosystem continue to debate how a future migration to quantum-resistant cryptography should be implemented. According to Galaxy, the process is expected to be considerably more complicated than previous network upgrades such as Taproot because it would require coordinated software updates and broad adoption across nearly every layer of the ecosystem.

Galaxy expands another part of its crypto business

The new initiative adds another business effort to Galaxy’s expanding digital asset operations during 2026.

In May, Galaxy Digital secured both a BitLicense and a Money Transmission License from the New York State Department of Financial Services through its subsidiary GalaxyOne Prime NY. The approvals allow the company to offer regulated digital asset trading and custody services to institutional clients across New York, including hedge funds, registered investment advisers and family offices using a platform that manages approximately $9 billion in client assets.

At the time, founder and chief executive Mike Novogratz said New York remains home to one of the largest pools of institutional capital in the United States, making the regulatory approval an important step in expanding Galaxy’s institutional business.

Earlier in the year, Galaxy also announced plans to launch a $100 million hedge fund investing in cryptocurrency tokens alongside financial services companies expected to benefit from digital asset adoption and regulatory developments. According to previously reported details, the fund attracted commitments from family offices, wealthy investors and institutional participants before launch, while Galaxy committed seed capital of its own.

Outside financial services, the company has also expanded its presence in digital infrastructure. Last week, Galaxy signed a 15-year agreement to rename Texas Tech University’s football venue as Galaxy Stadium beginning with the 2026 season. The partnership also makes Galaxy the university’s official digital assets and data center partner and builds on the company’s existing Helios data center campus in West Texas, which has approval for up to 1.6 gigawatts of power dedicated to artificial intelligence and high-performance computing.
