Where Will Bitcoin Be in 2030?

Bitcoin‘s (BTC -0.37%) strongest supporters know that it’s absolutely essential to have a long-term mindset when owning the digital asset. This view has paid off in the past.

Since Aug. 10, 2022, the most valuable cryptocurrency‘s price has risen 179% (as of Aug. 10). That gain would have turned $10,000 into $28,000 today.

Where will Bitcoin be four years from now in 2030?

History provides a clear answer

Bitcoin’s price movements have tracked a typical four-year cycle. Long-term holders understand this roller coaster all too well. The crypto experiences boom-and-bust periods that have become less dramatic over time. However, the ups and downs still test the temperament of even the most seasoned investors.

In 2022, 2018, and 2014, Bitcoin traded off its previous record. During those years, it was in the middle of a bear market. This is also happening right now, as the digital asset trades 48% below its peak.

Investors shouldn’t assume that past events will repeat themselves. However, history suggests that in 2030, Bitcoin won’t be trading at or near its all-time high. Instead, it will be in a bear market, which is usually the case about two years after a halving event (the next one is expected to occur in 2028). But Bitcoin should be higher than where it is today, with a more muted gain.

This means that four years from now, there will be loud chatter from critics claiming that Bitcoin’s best days are behind it and that the cryptocurrency is a failure. This is nothing new, despite the fact that the blockchain’s white paper would be almost 22 years old in August 2030.

This digital asset deserves a decade-long time horizon

Because Bitcoin exhibits a clear four-year cycle, investors interested in this cryptocurrency might naturally adopt a four-year time horizon. Over any 48-month time period, the digital asset is likely to produce a positive return. That’s an impressive hit rate that is supported by historical performance.

But I urge these prospective investors to think about Bitcoin with a 10-year time frame. Extending the time horizon this far out helps investors worry less about the inevitable and sometimes highly volatile price swings. And it will allow these holders to focus on the factors that matter most, such as Bitcoin’s adoption within traditional financial services and payments, the ongoing security of the blockchain, and its expanding network effect.

Another key variable to emphasize is Bitcoin’s scarcity. There is a hard cap of 21 million, indicating the maximum number of units that can be in circulation. This supports the cryptocurrency’s value proposition as an emerging store-of-value asset.

With Bitcoin down so much in the past 10 months, now is a great time to consider buying.
