Pakistan reports dangerous maneuvers by Indian ship in its economic zone

On September 16, Pakistan summoned the chargé d’affaires of the Indian High Commission and lodged a protest over the actions of an Indian Navy ship in Pakistan’s exclusive economic zone on September 15. Islamabad described these actions as “highly provocative and unacceptable.”

Statement by Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry

According to Dawn, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the incident occurred during the country’s biennial naval exercise, SEASPARK-26.

According to the ministry, an Indian warship carried out aggressive maneuvers at a dangerously close distance from a Pakistani naval vessel. Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry claims that contact occurred between the ships as a result.

More current news is available on the UA.News Telegram channel Telegram.

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry called the incident a serious violation of international law and the 1991 bilateral agreement on prior notification of military exercises, maneuvers, and troop movements. The ministry also said that the event could increase tensions in the region.

Diplomatic steps

The Indian diplomat was instructed to convey to New Delhi that Pakistan rejects what it called India’s “belligerent actions” and urges it to comply with international law and bilateral agreements aimed at preventing incidents at sea.

Pakistan also said that its chargé d’affaires in India would make a similar demarche at India’s Ministry of External Affairs. Islamabad called on the international community to encourage India to refrain from actions that, in Pakistan’s assessment, could destabilize the situation in South Asia.
