Best Performing Mid Cap Mutual Funds: Top 5 Schemes Based on 1-Year Returns

HSBC Midcap Fund topped the charts with a 15.71 per cent one-year return. Here’s a look at the five best-performing mid-cap mutual funds and why returns alone shouldn’t drive your investment decision.

✨ Key Takeaways

Mutual funds have become one of the most popular investment options for individuals looking to build long-term wealth without directly managing a stock portfolio. By pooling money from multiple investors, mutual funds invest across a diversified basket of securities that are managed by professional fund managers.

Among the different categories of equity mutual funds, Mid-Cap funds have attracted considerable attention in recent years. These funds invest primarily in mid-sized companies that are generally in their growth phase. While they have the potential to generate higher returns than Large-Cap funds over the long term, they also tend to experience higher volatility.

What are Mid Cap Mutual Funds?

Mid-cap mutual funds are equity schemes that invest at least 65 per cent of their assets in mid-cap companies, as defined by SEBI. These companies are ranked between 101st and 250th based on their full market capitalisation.

Mid-cap companies often have greater growth potential than mature large-cap businesses. However, they can also be more sensitive to economic cycles and market fluctuations. As a result, these funds are generally considered suitable for investors with a relatively higher risk appetite and a long-term investment horizon.

Past Returns Are Not the Only Factor

While historical performance can provide useful insights into how a fund has performed across different market conditions, it should not be the sole criterion when selecting a mutual fund.

Investors should also evaluate factors such as the fund’s investment strategy, consistency of returns across market cycles, risk-adjusted performance, portfolio quality, expense ratio, fund manager’s track record, asset size and how well the scheme aligns with their financial goals and risk tolerance. A well-rounded assessment can help investors make more informed investment decisions rather than relying only on short-term returns.
