Former premier Ted Baillieu and wife Robyn have put their house at 8 Calvin St, Hawthorn, on the market.

Former Victorian premier Ted Baillieu and wife Robyn have relisted their historic Hawthorn mansion for $8m-$8.6m, a sum seven figures lower than their previous price expectations.

In August 2025, the couple put the circa-1890s house on the market with a $9m-$9.9m range before later withdrawing it.

Mr Baillieu served in the state’s top political job from 2010 to 2013, after previously stepping into the Liberal Party’s leadership in opposition from 2006.

His many other public-facing roles have ranged from chairing the Victorian government’s ANZAC Centenary Committee to sitting on the Melbourne Cricket Club committee.

He was even Melbourne University’s honorary enterprise professor for the faculty of architecture, building and planning — a nod to his pre-politics career as an architect.

The Baillieus have owned their six-bedroom home at 8 Calvin St, named Kardinia, since the 1990s.

The home sits on land that once formed the Creswick Estate, centred on an 1845-built home. Sir Henry Creswick, who acquired the estate in 1852, married Jane Thomson, the daughter of Geelong’s first mayor Dr Alexander Thomson.

Abercrombys’ Simon Curtain said the couple’s decision to re-list the property with a lower range was an acknowledgment of Melbourne’s current real estate conditions.

Overall, the city is generally seeing reduced sales prices, listing numbers and clearance rates compared to 12 months ago.

“They went to the market before and did have genuine interest at the time and made the decision to take the next step, it’s the end of an era and it will be sold,” Mr Curtain said.

Ceilings higher than 3m, open fireplaces and period details remain throughout the house.

“It’s one of Hawthorn’s really spectacular residences and a very lucky family will take ownership of the home.”

The three-level abode, which underwent a large-scale renovation about 15 years ago, features

a kitchen with Gaggenau appliances and a butler’s pantry.

There’s also a lift, wine cellar and a 15m-long lap pool in the landscaped gardens.

A rooftop deck offers “spectacular” views of Melbourne’s CBD, the MCG and Yarra Valley.

The main bedroom suite includes a dressing room, ensuite with a spa bath, and terrace with city views.

The mansion’s name Kardinia is a word meaning sunrise, dawn or new beginning in the Indigenous Australian Wadawurrung language. It’s also shared with Kardinia Park in Geelong – and Mr Baillieu is a high-profile supporetr of the Cats.

When Kardinia was listed last year, Mr Baillieu described the house as “a family oasis of peace and quiet”.

He added that he and Robyn had decided to sell “at it’s time for the next adventure”.

Mr Curtain said the self-contained lower level made the home ideal for multi-generational living.

He noted the amount of space on offer – along with the five bathrooms – made the residence a great place to host family and friends.

“The kitchen, and the beautiful formal and informal living areas, the doors open up to the terrace and you could entertain any number of people, either a small or large group,” he said.

“It’s a really well thought through design, it’s a big home but it’s not overwhelming at any stage.”

Kardinia is for sale with a September 2 closing date.
