Dolphins news: Miami trades up with 49ers after Kadyn Proctor swing at No. 12

The Miami Dolphins are being proactive in this year’s NFL draft. They stayed put at 12, taking a chance at offensive lineman Kadyn Proctor. Now, Miami is looking to take another swing by trading up with the San Francisco 49ers.

“It’s No. 30 and 90 to SF in exchange for 27 and 138 to #Dolphins,” Ian Rapoport reports.

With the 27th pick in the 2026 NFL draft, the Dolphins decided to go with San Diego State University cornerback Chris Johnson. With new head coach Jeff Hafley being more of a defensive coach, this pick will prove to be important to the new roster the coach is building.

The Dolphins are in the midst of a major roster revamp. With the departure of ex-GM Chris Grier and ex-head coach Mike McDaniel, Miami has completely overhauled their roster. They have already traded wide receiver Jaylen Waddle for draft compensation and have let quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and pass rusher Bradley Chubb go. After a disappointing season, Miami is starting over anew.

Miami’s offseason hasn’t all just been departures and trading away players for picks, though. They acquired quarterback Malik Willis in free agency as their signal-caller for the 2026 season. They made to sure to keep Willis protected by drafting tackle Kadyn Proctor in the first round. While the pick is a bit of a reach, it’s still a good idea to make sure that your new quarterback has protection as he learns a new system.

The Dolphins will continue to be active in Days 2 and 3 of the NFL draft in the coming days.
