Nintendo introduces new Switch 2 purchase requirements in Japan amid scalping concerns

The ongoing hardware market challenges impacting the global industry have claimed another victim, as Nintendo recently announced that the Nintendo Switch 2 will see a significant price increase in certain regions around the world. While the situation is already difficult for many consumers, some resellers have apparently begun taking advantage of it.

According to a report published by GamesRadar, scalpers have been attempting to profit from the situation even before the official price hike takes effect in September. Nintendo previously confirmed that the Switch 2’s price will increase by $50 in the United States.

In a statement shared on X, the company said it had identified multiple suspicious orders believed to be connected to unauthorized resale activities, resulting in a suspension of sales for affected purchases.

Apparently, scalpers have been taking advantage of the weak Japanese yen, as the Japanese multilingual version of the Nintendo Switch 2 remains cheaper to import. While the console is priced at $450 in the U.S., importing the Japanese multilingual model reportedly brings the cost down to around $436.

Alongside the sales suspension announcement, Nintendo also revealed that the Japanese multilingual version of the Nintendo Switch 2 is now subject to additional purchasing requirements. These include accumulating at least 50 hours of gameplay on Nintendo Switch by the end of May 2026 (excluding demos and free-to-play titles), as well as limiting purchases to one console per Nintendo Account.

If you’re not familiar with the recent pricing changes, we’ve covered the situation in more detail here.
