Retail worker says NeeDoh craze drove 60-plus calls an hour, scalping, and even a ‘turf war’

A Reddit discussion about the craze surrounding NeeDohs painted a vivid picture of what can happen with impulse buys.

For some shoppers and retail workers in the Reddit thread, the trend is no longer just irritating. It has become expensive, stressful, and deeply wasteful.

Here’s what to know

In r/Anticonsumption, the original poster argued that the fad points to a larger issue than toy collecting.

“And it especially sucks that people are raising their children to be mindless consumers when it’s their future on the line with climate change,” they wrote.

A commenter who said they worked at a large retailer in a high-traffic area wrote that they “logged 60+ calls one hour” and that “87% were about NeeDohs.” Compare that to a previous average of five calls per hour.

The same user also described repeated calls from shoppers trying to track specific items by UPC, crowds forming around the help desk, and people lining up before opening. They said scalpers were part of the rush, some shoppers used children to get around purchase limits, and a “TURF WAR” had broken out over restocks.

Another commenter said there were “at least two posts daily” in local social media groups “about people scrambling to find certain ones.”

More background

Commenters also mentioned “Squeezies,” “Dumplings,” and “Sunny Day Squishys,” describing a cycle in which novelty toys quickly become hard-to-find items.

Someone else said a NeeDoh pillow they purchased for $20 was “now worth over $100.”

Other retail workers described constant phone calls, upset parents, and aggressive shoppers.

The environmental concern raised in the discussion extended beyond the toys themselves. While commenters disagreed about the materials inside NeeDohs, one noted that “they just pop and get tossed in the landfill.”

There was also a safety concern with imitation brands.

“I guess kids are microwaving them and getting badly burned,” a user said.

What can be done?

Commenters didn’t have many answers for how to solve a fad affecting children and adults alike.

Many users were particularly surprised that an old toy that had once been easily obtainable was now all the rage because of its popularity on TikTok.

“Even more proof those that do the most grueling labor don’t get off for Labor Day, on top of all the consumption nonsense,” one person lamented.

Where can I learn more?

Shopping for novelties can increase stress, overspending, and waste. Marketing, retail tactics, and the constant push to buy more can make everyday shopping feel exhausting while creating more disposable clutter.

• Shoppers described falling prey to invasive marketing that turned browsing into compulsive buying.

• Across the U.S., it takes the joy out when shopping is driven by relentless algorithmic pressure.

• At Walgreens, each week a different sale piled more plastic into routine shopping.

The pattern is hard to miss. Buying can quickly go from lighthearted to frustrating and wasteful.
