BCCI’s wealth highlights its power, but FIFA’s infrastructure model works on a global scale

The BCCI is one of the most influential organisations in sport, but its financial strength sits within a very different structure to FIFA’s global football system.

This is not simply a comparison of which organisation has more money. It is about where that money goes, what standards it supports and how far those standards extend.

FIFA operates through an international development network. The BCCI’s focus is Indian cricket, where financial power, elite venues and governance sit within one national sporting framework.

FIFA is aiming for USD 11bn in revenue over the 2023 to 2026 cycle, a figure that shows the scale of its current commercial programme.

Much of that money is channelled into development through FIFA Forward 3.0, which is designed to support football projects across its member associations.

Under current rules, each association can receive up to USD 8m over a four-year cycle, with funding eligible for pitches, technical centres, training grounds, stadiums and headquarters.

This gives FIFA a broad infrastructure role beyond organising major tournaments. Its model links central funding directly to facilities and long-term development across the sport.

BCCI’s focus remains the Indian game

The BCCI’s audited accounts and budgets are confirmed through its governance updates, while its official reports show the scale of its operation.

Its remit, however, is different from FIFA’s. The BCCI runs and develops cricket within India, rather than managing a global network of national associations.

India has several world-class cricket stadiums, and the commercial strength of the domestic game is clear. The wider question is how consistently that quality appears across domestic grounds, training access and supporter facilities.

That makes the FIFA comparison useful, but only when framed properly. It is less a straight verdict on wealth and more a contrast between two different models of sporting influence.

The BCCI’s money gives Indian cricket major power. FIFA’s structure gives football a wider infrastructure network. Those are related strengths, but they are not the same thing.
