Honda’s Odyssey Gets Another Facelift for 2028, Albeit Only in CGI Land

The current Honda Odyssey is one aging product that’s in dire need of a replacement if it wants to remain competitive in the minivan game across North America (and not only).

The model is in the fifth generation, and has been for almost an entire decade. You see, production commenced at the Lincoln factory in Alabama back in April 2017, subsequent to the grand unveiling hosted that same year at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. Three years later, the company gave it a mid-cycle refresh for the 2021 model year, and instead of retiring, it gave it another facelift in 2024, for the 2025 model year.

That happened three years ago, so a new generation is long overdue. Thus, one might think that the Japanese automaker is already working on the all-new sixth-generation model, right? Wrong, because Honda is looking to save money, so it is further pushing back several models. The next Odyssey is said to have been further delayed, and is now expected to come out of hiding at the turn of the decade, and that is also the case of the Accord.

As a result, if you wish to wait for Honda to launch a new generation of the Odyssey, then you are in for a lengthy wait. So, if that is indeed the case, then what is up with the one pictured in the gallery above? Well, as mentioned in the title, this one lives in CGI Land. Thus, it is a rendered project, one that came from the AutoYa Interior YouTube channel, with its creator imagining it from two angles on the outside, and as many when it comes to the interior.

If you check it out in more detail in the gallery, or in the video embedded at the bottom of this story, then you will see that it does not exactly look like an evolution of its predecessor. For instance, it features a pointier nose overall, with split lighting units. The upper ones are the daytime running lights, and the lower units are actually the main clusters. There is a lower grille horizontally split by the license plate holder, and an integrated apron that actually looks evolutionary.

Further back, we can see that this rendered 2028 Honda Odyssey has a redesigned hood, and the front pillars are now more raked. The lines on the sides are the same, and at the rear, it features a light bar across the tailgate, and an illuminated corporate logo above it. The rear license plate still sits in the middle of the tailgate, the two emblems carry over, albeit in black, the roof spoiler is on the evolutionary side of things, and the rear bumper is completely new, alongside the reflectors that were repositioned.

The rear pillars look the same, and to be honest, given that the profile is pretty much identical, this would be another mid-cycle refresh rather than an entirely new generation. On top of that, the rendering artist behind these digital illustrations refers to the imagined people carrier as being a 2027 model. However, the real one is in the 2027 model year, and that would make this minivan a 2028 model.

Moving on to the interior further further strengthens our belief that this is another mid-cycle refresh. That’s because the lower section of the dashboard panel carries over from the current one, complete with the center console. The seats are also identical, and so are the sunroof, visors, rearview mirror, and other features that we can see.

In fact, the only modifications here are the steering wheel, which is new, and the dual screens that now sit behind a single pane of glass. The controls for the HVAC system are also new. And overall, this rendered 2028 Honda Odyssey may feel more modern, but it is based on the same old bones. And between us, this model does not necessarily need a third facelift, but an entirely new generation, and judging by the latest reports, we will have to wait until the first half of 2030 for that.

It will be interesting to see what Honda has in story for the Odyssey by then, and to be honest, we wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up giving it a third facelift in an attempt to keep it on the competitive side of the segment. Mind you, that’s only our two cents, and you should not quote us on it. And if a third facelift is indeed in store, then there is no guarantee whatsoever that it will look anything like this inside and out.

Meanwhile, the real 2027 Honda Odyssey starts from $43,195 in the EX-L trim level, $44,295 for the Sport-L, $47,895 for the Touring, and $52,095 for the range-topping Elite. All feature a 3.5-liter V6 paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The engine is rated at 280 hp (284 ps/209 kW) and 262 lb-ft (355 Nm) of torque.
