Plans for 16 new council homes scrapped by council

A plan for 16 new council homes on Grayson Road has been scrapped by Rotherham Council for being “not financially viable”.

In 2024, the council cabinet approved plans for homes to be built at a site on Grayson Road, Greasbrough.

The properties would have been a mixture of two and three bedroom family homes, alongside a number of bungalows or low rise apartments.

A recent council housing update presented to the cabinet said that work on the project had determined that it is “not financially viable” for the council to deliver homes on this site.

Ian Spicer, strategic director of adult care, housing and public health, said: “As part of the detailed design and survey work at Grayson Road, further assessments identified significant additional costs related to ground conditions and required drainage infrastructure.

“As a result, building around 15 council homes on the site would be disproportionately expensive and would not represent good value for money for residents. The site has therefore been removed from the current housing development programme, which is on track to provide 1,000 council homes for local people by summer 2027.”

The council said the site would be reviewed as part of a Housing Growth Framework being developed.

The report said the framework “will aim to ensure housing growth meets the needs of residents” and “is key to the council achieving the overall government target of 1,111 new homes a year”.
