Trading Standards officers, supported by Police, have carried out a ‘compliance check’ at an American sweet and vape shop in Shanklin.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing officers from the Isle of Wight Council’s Trading Standards team enter ‘The Chill Stop’, a commercial premises located on High Street, on 9th September.

The visit comes after a number of readers contacted Island Echo to say they had reported the recently-launched business to Trading Standards over concerns relating to tobacco products.

A photo shared with Island Echo shows an iPad being used inside the premises to display pictures of what appear to be tobacco products for sale.

However, the Isle of Wight Council has not confirmed whether tobacco products formed part of its compliance check, whether any such products were seized or whether any offences have been identified.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that officers attended to assist the council’s Trading Standards team with their search.

A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Council has said:

“The Isle of Wight Council Trading Standards team has recently undertaken compliance checks with traders on the Island, supported by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police.

“Due to ongoing enforcement work it is not possible to offer any further details at this stage.”

The shop continues to trade.
