Morgan Stanley’s Nick Savone: Earnings Up, Multiples Down, and Q3 Still Refused to Break

Savone’s macro point is that oil has stopped being just another commodity input and has become part of the market’s main transmission channel. Brent is now unusually influential for both yields and equities, with the 10-year finishing Q3 around multi-decade highs and increasingly acting as the hurdle rate everything else has to clear.

That +60% correlation between Brent and US 10-year yields is the key. Every fresh oil spike is now showing up in the bond market first and then bleeding into equities through a higher discount rate. Once crude and the long end start moving together, the market gets hit twice: inflation expectations harden, yields move higher, and rate-sensitive parts of the equity market feel the squeeze.

  • Oil has become the macro transmission channel. Brent is now moving almost tick-for-tick with the US 10-year, which means every energy spike is feeding directly into the hurdle rate for equities.

  • The index is being carried by earnings, not multiples. Global equities still rose in Q3 even as valuations compressed sharply, and S&P forward EPS is up 38% in a year. The market has not ignored higher rates; it has survived them because earnings have done the heavy lifting.

  • Breadth is still the weak link. More than half the Russell 3000 has already suffered a 20% drawdown since June, only a small share of S&P stocks remain above their 50DMA, and the early-cycle winners are taking the brunt of the punishment.

  • Europe is where sovereign stress is becoming harder to dismiss. French spreads are back near levels last seen during the euro crisis, while inflation and fiscal pressure leave the ECB with very little room for error.

  • AI is still the dominant micro trade, but the market is becoming far more selective. Agentic AI has created a sharp divide between beneficiaries and disruption losers, just as hedge funds remain reluctant to add broad risk. The quarter may have looked resilient at the index level, but under the surface it was a market of violent rotations, narrowing leadership and very little margin for error.
