PGN showcases Sumatra gas infrastructure to investors, eyes growth through network expansion

Jakarta – State-owned gas company PT Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN) has showcased its natural gas infrastructure in North Sumatra to its largest retail investors, highlighting the company’s readiness to support business growth and expand gas connectivity across Sumatra and the Riau Islands, the company said on Monday, July 13.

The investor visit was aimed at demonstrating PGN’s operational capabilities, infrastructure management, and the potential for future market expansion, supported by strategic projects such as the planned North Sumatra–Riau (Sutri) gas transmission pipeline being developed by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

PGN’s Director of Infrastructure and Technology, Heri Murahmanta, said the Sumatra region offers a balanced customer portfolio, combining large industrial gas consumers in Batam with highly penetrated markets in Medan and Palembang.

“The combination of these market characteristics is a strength for PGN in maintaining healthy and sustainable business growth while creating a more balanced customer risk profile,” Heri said.

As of April 2026, PGN’s Sales and Operation Region I distributed around 147 billion British thermal units per day (BBTUD) of natural gas to more than 136,000 customers across Sumatra and the Riau Islands.

PGN said its North Sumatra operations are supported by infrastructure managed by subsidiary PT Pertamina Gas Operation North Sumatera Area (ONSA), which is connected to domestic gas supplies, including the Arun LNG regasification facility and several upstream gas blocks. The network supplies electricity generators, industrial estates, and fertiliser producers.

According to Heri, the Sutri transmission pipeline will strengthen gas connectivity across the island by linking northern, central, and southern Sumatra, allowing greater flexibility in transporting domestic gas from Aceh to Lampung.

PGN currently operates approximately 1,834 kilometres of gas pipelines serving residential, commercial, and industrial customers in northern Sumatra. The company said it will continue integrating pipeline and non-pipeline infrastructure, including compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG), to meet growing energy demand and support Indonesia’s energy transition.
