Tom Kim has decided to withdraw from the forthcoming Baycurrent Classic after claiming a gold medal at the Asian Games.

The South Korean golfer secured a three-stroke victory at Kasugai Country Club, closing with a 6-under-par 64 to finish 18-under and seal the title.

Kim’s victory also came with the added bonus of securing an exemption from mandatory military service in his homeland.

The 24-year-old, who has won four times on the PGA Tour, was expected to tee it up next week in Japan at the Baycurrent Classic but he has decided to withdraw, likely so he can relax and enjoy his victory.

Kim has been replaced in the field by Kris Ventura.

The 2026 Baycurrent Classic will take place over 15-18 October at Yokohoma Country Club. Xander Schauffele will return to defend his title.

Other notables in the field include Billy Horschel, Min Woo Lee, Collin Morikawa, Rickie Fowler, Max Homa, Keegan Bradley and Sahith Theegala.

A bogey at the 17th briefly threatened to reduce his cushion, but five birdies and an eagle earlier in the round had given him enough breathing room.

He made par at the last before celebrating his victory with an emotional roar.

The gold medal also carries significance beyond the golf course, allowing Kim to avoid South Korea’s compulsory military service.

South Korean men are generally required to complete between 18 and 21 months of military service before turning 28.

However, athletes who win gold at the Asian Games or claim an Olympic medal are eligible for an exemption, subject to completing a short period of basic military training.

Kim’s victory means he can now continue his professional career without the lengthy interruption that military service would have caused.

He arrived at the Asian Games after competing in the Presidents Cup in the United States.

He travelled directly to Japan and faced a demanding schedule, with only around six hours of sleep and a 14-hour time difference to contend with.

Kim had previously been close to earning a military exemption at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

He opened the tournament tied for third but eventually finished eighth, leaving him without the exemption.

His Asian Games triumph has now removed that uncertainty.

The result also highlighted the contrasting fortunes of his fellow South Koreans.

SH Kim, 28, was unable to secure an exemption after South Korea finished with silver in the team event, while Mun Do-yeob had already completed his military service.
