Underrated Gold | Liam Keen | Features | News

Selecting the players, games and kits from Old Gold history he deems to be the most underrated is the Express and Star’s Wolves correspondent, Liam Keen.

Goalkeeper | John Ruddy

After John Ruddy’s first season at Wolves, no one would have described him as underrated, but the remaining four years of his time at the club he found himself on the bench. He was a strong leader, good goalkeeper and deserves appreciation for his contribution.

Defender | Toti

Going with a current player, it has to be Toti Gomes. His rise up the ranks at Wolves after returning from a loan at Grasshoppers has been a shock to everyone and he has grown into a strong Premier League defender that is appreciated by his managers, but underrated elsewhere.

Midfielder | Dave Edwards

Growing up as a Wolves fan, I always enjoyed watching Dave Edwards play. Arriving late in the box, scoring goals and having loyalty to our club – he was always entertaining. Outside of Wolves, I do not think he got the recognition he deserved for his quality on and off the ball.

Forward | Nouha Dicko

Pacey, strong and with an eye for goal – Nouha Dicko had it all as Wolves won League One back in 2014. His career trajectory since then has had some interesting turns and points to the fact that he was not as highly rated outside of Molineux as his talents should have been.

Manager | Dave Jones

For me, Dave Jones springs to mind. His history at Wolves is evident with our first ever promotion to the Premier League and he did well at other clubs too, but outside of the footballing community he is rarely spoken about for his contributions to the game.

Match | Everton 1-2 Wolves, 2022/23

This one will surprise people, but I’ve gone for Wolves’ late 2-1 win at Everton on Boxing Day 2022. It kickstarted Julen Lopetegui saving the club from relegation on his first Premier League game in charge and the scenes from Rayan Ait-Nouri’s late winner were fantastic to watch.

Season | 2014/15

For me, 2014/15 sticks out. The first season back in the Championship and it was so close to back-to-back promotions, as we missed out on the play-offs by goal difference. Dicko and Bakary Sako were a joy to watch and banged in the goals consistently.

Shirt | 2018/19 home

I’ve gone for the 2018/19 home shirt. Yes, it may have been a lighter shade of gold than most people wanted, but I genuinely liked the shirt. More importantly, what it represents and the memories of that first season back in the Premier League make it a special one.

This article originally featured in Wolves’ official 2025/26 matchday programme. Last season’s programmes are still available to purchase online through retailers Curtis Sports.
