Altcoins are breaking out, but why isn’t anyone calling it an altseason yet?

Altcoins have been stuck in the mud for what feels like forever. However, are things about to change in the near term?

Altcoins have waited two years for THIS!

The combined market cap of every coin outside the top 10 just broke above a trendline it’s been trapped under since late 2024.

And, it’s not been a small move either. In fact, the same is up over 10% this week, starting at about $199 billion to close near $220 billion.

Here, it’s worth noting that all this is happening on a support zone that’s held for about 1,000 days straight.

The timing is interesting too because crypto analyst AshCrypto mentioned on X that the four-year cycle usually treats 2026 as a bear phase. To its credit, Bitcoin’s holding up too, despite the failed Clarity Act vote and the Fed hiking rates.

The altcoins’ all-time high near $451 billion is still a long way off. No one’s calling it altseason yet.

On the other hand…

That’s not all either as at press time, Bitcoin dominance seemed to be forming what looks like a bearish descending triangle on the weekly charts.

If that breaks down, capital might just rotate out of Bitcoin and into everything else. Especially altcoins.

That might even be convenient timing because it would coincide with the breakout alts just noted.

There is a catch here though. CoinShares recently shared that Bitcoin’s stuck between a Fed that’s leaning hawkish and the CLARITY Act’s setback. According to the same, BTC won’t push decisively above $80K before year-end. Not unless inflation calms down or the Fed lowers its tone.

Here, what’s worth noting, however, is that Bitcoin is fairly insulated from the regulatory mess. On the contrary, altcoins like Ethereum [ETH] are far more exposed to it.

What’s holding it back?

For all the breakout talk, one metric refuses to collaborate. CoinMarketCap’s Altcoin Season Index was at 46 at press time; that’s Bitcoin territory.

It actually climbed up from 42 yesterday and 37 last week. Simply put, the direction is right. Just not the magnitude.

A reading below 75 doesn’t count as an altcoin season by CMC’s own definition. And, the index has been under that mark for months, nowhere near September 2025’s high of 78.

Final Summary

  • Altcoin market cap outside the top 10 broke a 2-year downtrend.
  • BTC.D looked bearish, but the altseason index is still at 46.
