Bitcoin Eyes Major Resistance as Jackson Hole Kicks Off With Unusual Fed Agenda

In brief

  • Bitcoin trades at $80,526, up 1.9% on the day, after getting rejected near $81,265 earlier this week.
  • The Fed’s Jackson Hole symposium opened today under the theme “Financial Innovation: Implications for Payments and Policy,” with new Chair Kevin Warsh’s keynote due Friday.
  • The charts are signaling overbought conditions for BTC, even as the broader trend score seems bullish.

Bitcoin is knocking on the door of its next major resistance wall right as the world’s most-watched central banking conference gets underway with an agenda that, for once, is actually about crypto’s own back yard.

BTC is changing hands at $80,526, up 1.9% today after opening at $79,023 and tagging an intraday high of $80,808. That puts the cryptocurrency roughly 2.5% below the $82,538 level that capped a previous breakout attempt, and it comes two days after Bitcoin was rejected near $81,000 as its 50-week moving average, sitting around $81,085, capped the rally.

The 2026 Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium runs August 27-29 under the theme “Financial Innovation: Implications for Payments and Policy” with digital payments and fintech infrastructure placed at the center of the program. New Fed Chair Kevin Warsh delivers his first keynote as chair on Friday, August 28, with traders pricing September rate-hike odds at roughly one-in-three heading into the speech.

Bitcoin price: What the charts say

The move that got Bitcoin here has been almost entirely macro-driven. Bitcoin’s August surge traces back to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s announcement of expanded Treasury bond buybacks, which pushed yields and the dollar lower and revived the so-called “debasement trade”—the strategy of buying scarce assets like Bitcoin and gold as a hedge against currency weakness.

That single announcement helped fuel a week in which Bitcoin gained 23.6% in its second-strongest weekly performance since early 2021, surging from around $62,000 to nearly $80,000.

The chart itself is flashing an overheated but structurally strong setup with current price sitting comfortably above the average price of both the last 50 days and the last 200 days.

The momentum readings, though, are stretched. The Relative Strength Index, or RSI, sits at 82.4—well into overbought territory, a zone where traders typically expect profit-taking or at least a pause even within a healthy uptrend. The Squeeze Momentum indicator is off, with momentum accelerating, consistent with a market that already broke out and is now testing how far the move can run before buyers need a rest.

The fundamental tailwinds, though, are real and still building. The rally has been reinforced by yet another White House tease about the U.S. potentially accumulating more Bitcoin, adding a policy tailwind on top of the macro one. If Jackson Hole produces any signal that the Fed is comfortable with looser policy, or if Warsh’s keynote leans dovish on the payments-innovation theme, that combination of falling yields and a weaker dollar is exactly the environment that has powered Bitcoin’s move from $62,000 to $80,000 already this month.

The technical picture argues for at least a pause before any push through resistance. An RSI above 80 is a textbook overbought signature—not a reversal signal on its own, but a condition that has repeatedly capped Bitcoin’s upside in this same rally, including Tuesday’s rejection at $81,265.
