Haaland benched for World Cup finale, but his NFTs are playing overtime

Erling Haaland watched Norway’s World Cup group stage finale against France from the bench on June 26, and Norwegian fans were not happy about it. Coach Stale Solbakken called it a “no-brainer.” France apparently agreed, putting four goals past a Haaland-less Norway in a 4-1 rout in Boston.

But here’s the thing. Norway had already punched their ticket to the knockout rounds. And while the scoreline looked ugly, the strategic calculus was straightforward: keep your best striker fresh for the matches that actually matter.

The on-field logic and the off-field market

Solbakken rested both Haaland and Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard for the France fixture. The decision had full team support, according to the coach. With qualification already secured, risking injury to your two most important players in a dead rubber would have been genuinely reckless.

Haaland’s tournament to that point had been electric. The Manchester City striker scored multiple goals in the group stage, including braces in Norway’s earlier matches. His performances were the primary reason Norway advanced in the first place.

Sorare NFTs featuring Haaland have seen significant trading activity during the World Cup. Individual Haaland cards on the fantasy football NFT platform have sold for as much as 265 ETH, roughly $600,000 to $750,000 depending on when the transaction cleared.

Meme tokens join the party, for better or worse

Beyond the more established Sorare marketplace, Haaland’s World Cup heroics have also sparked activity in the less regulated corners of crypto. A Solana-based meme token called $HAALAND has experienced speculative spikes tied to his goal-scoring exploits.

Before anyone gets too excited: the $HAALAND token has a market capitalization under $20,000. That’s not a typo. We’re talking about a token with the liquidity of a lemonade stand.

There are no official endorsements or crypto projects tied to Haaland or the Norwegian Football Federation. The market activity around his name is entirely community-driven and speculative.

What this means for crypto investors watching the World Cup

Sorare represents the more institutional end of this spectrum. The platform has licensing deals with major football leagues and operates as a regulated fantasy sports product. Cards selling for 265 ETH signals that collectors and fantasy players assign real value to in-form athletes on the biggest stage.

Tokens like $HAALAND with sub-$20,000 market caps are essentially lottery tickets with expiration dates. They spike when the player scores, they crash when attention moves elsewhere.

Solbakken’s decision to rest Haaland against France, despite the backlash, was ultimately about protecting an asset. Not a digital one, but the 6-foot-4 Norwegian who keeps putting the ball in the back of the net.
