RedCoin : HSBC To Launch Hong Kong Dollar Backed Stablecoin Via PayMe

HSBC (NYSE: HSBC) has taken a visible step toward introducing a regulated Hong Kong dollar stablecoin, announcing that the token will be called HSBC RedCoin. The name was disclosed on 30 September 2026 as the bank prepares a commercial rollout later in the year.

Officials emphasised that no coins have been issued yet and warned the public to treat any circulating tokens claiming an HSBC connection as fraudulent.

The project sits under a stablecoin issuer licence granted by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority in April 2026, numbered FRS02.

Each unit is designed to remain fully reserved by high-quality, liquid assets held in segregated accounts and to be redeemable one-for-one for Hong Kong dollars.

The bank presents the structure as an extension of conventional banking safeguards into digital form rather than an experiment detached from existing controls.

Initial distribution will be tightly controlled.

RedCoin will first appear inside two platforms customers already use: the PayMe payment app, which serves more than 3.3 million users, and the HSBC Hong Kong mobile banking application.

Early functions centre on everyday retail activity—instant person-to-person transfers and payments to participating merchants.

Later phases are expected to include wholesale, corporate and institutional applications as the city’s digital asset framework matures.

Tokenised investment subscriptions via the banking app have also been mentioned as a possible use, subject to further approvals.

A customer survey of more than 1,000 local clients accompanied the naming announcement.

Seventy-four per cent of respondents recognised at least one practical use for stablecoins.

The most frequently cited applications were digital-asset trading and tokenized investments (57 per cent), followed by peer-to-peer transfers (53 per cent), cross-border remittances (52 per cent) and merchant payments (52 per cent). Sixty per cent correctly described a stablecoin as a fiat-backed digital asset, though gaps remain: 26 per cent assumed such tokens are government-issued and 10 per cent expected them to pay interest, a feature Hong Kong’s current rules do not allow.

Respondents said clearer regulation and better public education would do most to raise confidence.

Maggie Ng, HSBC’s Hong Kong chief executive and head of retail banking and wealth, linked the branding to the bank’s long-standing identity in the city.

She described the launch as a starting point rather than an endpoint, aimed at supporting Hong Kong’s financial innovation while keeping security, trust and simplicity at the centre.

The bank’s official product page repeats that message, stating teams are working to bring RedCoin to customers in 2026 and urging people to watch that site for updates.

Hong Kong’s Stablecoins Ordinance, which took effect in August 2025, created a licensing regime for fiat-referenced tokens.

HSBC was one of only two first-round licence holders.

The other, Anchorpoint Financial, has pursued a more institutional path.

HSBC’s choice to begin with retail rails already used by millions of people marks a different strategy: embed the token inside familiar banking and payment interfaces instead of asking customers to adopt new wallets or exchanges first.

No blockchain, exact launch date or public contract address has been published.

Until issuance begins, the only official channels remain HSBC’s own communications.

The combination of a licensed issuer, segregated reserves and distribution through established apps positions RedCoin as one of the more closely watched regulated HKD tokens as Hong Kong tries to grow a domestic digital-money market.
