Should You Buy Bitcoin or a Bitcoin ETF? Fees, Taxes and Custody Compared

Buying Bitcoin directly and buying a Bitcoin ETF both track the same price, yet fees, taxes, and custody rules create a surprisingly wide gap between the two that catches most investors off guard.

When deciding between buying Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) directly or investing in a Bitcoin ETF, it’s important to look at how they compare in terms of fees, taxes, and custody. While both options provide similar exposure to Bitcoin’s price, the choice depends on your individual needs and preferences.

As of September 27, 2026, the price of Bitcoin is around $85,000. Over the past year, Bitcoin has dropped 23.2%, and the Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (CBOE: FBTC), one of the largest Bitcoin ETFs, has fallen 23.4%. Although the difference in decline is slight, understanding the underlying factors that affect fees, custody, and taxes is crucial for making an informed decision.

FBTC Charges 0.25% a Year, and Direct Bitcoin Trades on Weekends

FBTC has an expense ratio of 0.25% per year. This means that for a $10,000 investment, you’d pay $25 annually in fees. Over two decades, this could add up to about $490 at a consistent price. Surprisingly, many investors don’t realize they’re paying these fees—only 45% of ETF and mutual fund owners report paying them, according to a FINRA Investor Education Foundation survey.

On the other hand, when you buy Bitcoin directly, there are no ongoing yearly fees. Instead, you pay for the trading fees on the exchange and a network fee when moving coins to your personal wallet. If you choose to invest in a hardware wallet for extra security, that is typically a one-time cost of around $100.

Another difference is that Bitcoin trading occurs around the clock, while FBTC can only be traded during U.S. market hours. For instance, if FBTC’s last price on a weekend is based on Friday’s close, any price changes over the weekend won’t be reflected until the market reopens. This can be a concern if you’re trying to react to market movements quickly.

The ETF Removes the Private-Key Risk and Hands Custody to a Fund

When you hold Bitcoin directly, you manage your own private keys, which are essentially the secure passwords that prove you own the coins. This self-custody reduces counterparty risk, meaning there’s no chance of a company losing your assets. However, if you lose your private keys, you lose access to your coins completely, and there’s no way to recover them.

If you store your Bitcoin on an exchange, you face different risks, as the exchange holds the keys. Unfortunately, there’s no SIPC insurance protecting your funds if the exchange fails, which has happened in the past, leaving many customers unable to retrieve their money.

With FBTC, custody is managed by an institutional custodian within a regulated fund. This means you don’t have to worry about losing a private key. However, you also cannot withdraw the coins to your own wallet or send them elsewhere.

Retirement Accounts and Tax Forms Give the ETF Its Biggest Edge

One of the major advantages of a spot Bitcoin ETF is its ability to fit into traditional retirement accounts like IRAs or 401(k)s, provided your plan has brokerage options. This allows your investments to grow either tax-deferred or tax-free, depending on the account type. In contrast, holding Bitcoin directly usually requires the use of a specific crypto IRA provider, limiting your options.

When it comes to taxes, FBTC holders receive a Form 1099-B that makes tracking gains straightforward. This form outlines the proceeds from sales and your cost basis—the amount you initially paid for the shares.

If you own Bitcoin directly, exchanges provide a Form 1099-DA for sales, with cost basis only for coins purchased after January 1, 2026. If you have coins in a personal wallet, you won’t receive any tax reporting at all, making it your responsibility to keep track of what you paid for older coins.

Should You Buy Bitcoin or a Bitcoin ETF?

In conclusion, a spot Bitcoin ETF is often more suitable for those saving for retirement because of the IRA access and easier tax reporting, despite the 0.25% annual fee. Direct Bitcoin may appeal more to individual investors who are comfortable managing private keys and want flexibility in trading hours, especially if they anticipate market changes.

Ultimately, whether you choose the ETF or direct ownership depends on your personal investment strategy and risk tolerance. As a reminder, investing in crypto remains risky—66% of investors described it as extremely or very risky in a 2024 FINRA Foundation survey, up from 58% in 2021. Choose wisely based on your comfort level and financial goals.
