Central Bank Governor Nandalal Weerasinghe stated that maintaining adequate foreign exchange reserves is essential for Sri Lanka’s macroeconomic stability.

Speaking at the CBSL Reserve Management Conference 2026, he noted that the 2022 economic crisis showed the consequences of inadequate foreign reserves.

He stated that low reserves can constrain imports and debt servicing, increase exchange rate and inflationary pressures, and weaken confidence in the economy.
