How Amosun became Babcock’s best graduating Economics student

For many, balancing a demanding political career with postgraduate studies would seem an impossible task.

Yet for Ogun State politician and Federal Commissioner representing the state at the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, Akeem Akintayo Amosun, the pursuit of academic excellence has become another defining chapter in his public life.

At the 15th Postgraduate Convocation of Babcock University held on July 21, Amosun was announced as the overall best graduating Master’s student in the Department of Economics, graduating with the highest cumulative grade point average (CGPA) in his class.

The achievement drew attention not only because of the academic honour attached to it but also because it came from a public office holder, whose schedule is dominated by governance, politics and community engagement.

A victory for discipline

Those who know Amosun described his success as the product of consistency rather than chance. According to him, attending every lecture, completing assignments personally and paying close attention in class formed the foundation of his outstanding academic performance.

“I attended all the classes. I didn’t miss lectures for any reason and I did all my assignments myself,” he said while reflecting on the journey that culminated in the prestigious award.

His approach reinforces the belief that academic success often depends less on extraordinary talent than on discipline, commitment and effective time management.

Lifelong learning a personal creed

Amosun’s latest academic accomplishment is not his first. Before enrolling for the Master’s degree in Economics, he had already earned a Master of Business Administration from the Lagos Business School in 2010.

Rather than viewing education as a phase of life, he regards it as a continuous process. He frequently encourages young people and members of his political academy to upgrade their qualifications, urging Higher National Diploma holders to pursue degree conversion programmes and graduates to advance to postgraduate studies.

For him, educational qualifications are not merely certificates but investments that prepare individuals for future opportunities and leadership responsibilities.

Balancing politics and scholarship

Many wonder how Amosun successfully combined the demands of politics with rigorous postgraduate studies.

His answer is simple: careful planning, commitment and prioritising education despite competing responsibilities.

His accomplishment challenges the assumption that political office inevitably limits intellectual development. Instead, it demonstrates that public service and academic excellence can complement one another when pursued with determination.

Inspiring a new generation

Amosun’s recognition has resonated beyond the university community. Supporters see the award as validation of the values he consistently promotes—hard work, discipline and continuous self-improvement.

His educational journey also reflects the philosophy that effective leadership requires constant learning. By returning to the classroom despite occupying public office, he has provided an example for young professionals and aspiring leaders who often struggle to combine career advancement with further education.

Looking ahead

Having added another academic milestone to his profile, Amosun has indicated that he is already considering doctoral studies, signalling that the pursuit of knowledge remains an ongoing mission.

His achievement at Babcock University’s postgraduate convocation stands as more than a personal victory. It illustrates the enduring relevance of education in leadership development and serves as a reminder that learning remains one of the most powerful tools for personal growth and public service.
