Reading Terminal Market draws millions of visitors each year, a new study finds the market generates $146 million in annual economic activity across Pennsylvania.

Reading Terminal Market isn’t just Philadelphia’s most beloved food hall, it’s a $146 million engine driving Pennsylvania’s economy, according to a new study, writes Marcela Camargo for NBC10 Philadelphia.

The Market’s first-ever economic and community impact study, “Feeding the City, Fueling the Economy,” touts the Market’s annual economic activity within Philadelphia alone at $126 million, supporting roughly 650 city jobs.

Statewide, that footprint grows to about 740 jobs and an estimated $2.7 million in tax revenue, including roughly $1.5 million flowing back to Philadelphia.

“The Market is both a beloved civic institution, and a powerful and vital economic engine for Philadelphia and Pennsylvania,” said Reading Terminal Market CEO and General Manager Annie Allman.

The numbers behind that claim are staggering.

About 5.9 million people passed through Reading Terminal’s doors in 2025, and those visitors went on to spend an estimated $1.2 billion across Philadelphia during their trips, meaning the Market functions as a launchpad for tourism dollars citywide.

The study also points to something harder to quantify than dollars, the Market’s role as a steady presence during hard times.

“In periods of crisis and uncertainty, the Market is a reliable mainstay … ready to serve the city and its residents,” the report states.

That impact runs through more than 75 locally owned merchants, cementing Reading Terminal’s place not just as a tourist stop, but as a working piece of Philadelphia’s economic infrastructure and a vital source of food access for residents.
