Dimensional’s 2026 Capital Gain Estimates: Mostly Zeros Again

Every fall, many mutual fund investors get a surprise tax bill. Funds are required to pass realized capital gains on to shareholders, usually in December. Investors in taxable accounts owe tax on those distributions even if they never sold a share, and even if they bought the fund only a few weeks before the record date.

Dimensional Fund Advisors has published its preliminary 2026 capital gain estimates (data as of August 14, 2026). Across Dimensional’s lineup, most funds show zeros again.¹

The numbers

Among Dimensional’s 54 equity mutual funds:¹

– 51 of 54 (94%) are not projected to distribute any short-term capital gains. The three that are — Global Social Core Equity (DGBEX), World Core Equity (DREIX) and Global Equity (DGEIX) — are each estimated at 0.12% of NAV or less.

– 42 of 54 (78%) are not projected to distribute any long-term capital gains. Dimensional notes that many of the 12 funds that will are funds of funds.

– The largest estimate among the equity mutual funds is 4.50% of NAV, for International Small Cap Value Portfolio (DISVX).

None of Dimensional’s 35 equity ETFs are expected to distribute short- or long-term capital gains.¹

“None of Dimensional’s 35 equity ETFs are expected to distribute short- or long-term capital gains.”

Even among the 12 equity mutual funds with an estimated distribution, most estimates are small. Seven of the 12 are below 1.5% of NAV.¹

Dimensional funds widely held in IFA portfolios

Of the 10 Dimensional equity mutual funds with the largest holdings across IFA client portfolios,² eight are not projected to make any capital gain distribution:

“Of the 10 Dimensional equity mutual funds most widely held by IFA clients, eight are not projected to make any capital gain distribution.”

Why DISVX is distributing

A fund distributes capital gains when it sells securities that have gone up in value and it has no losses to offset them. DISVX’s estimated long-term gain of $1.607 per share reflects gains the fund has realized after appreciation in its holdings. Because the gain is long-term, it is generally taxed at long-term capital gains rates in taxable accounts.

A distribution does not change the value of a shareholder’s investment. The fund’s share price drops by the amount paid out.¹

Why distributions matter, and when they don’t

– Only taxable accounts are affected. Distributions inside IRAs, 401(k)s and other tax-deferred accounts are not taxed when paid.

– Short-term gains usually cost more than long-term gains. Short-term gains are generally taxed at ordinary income rates. Dimensional notes that part of a short-term gain may be classified as qualified dividend income and taxed at a lower rate.¹

– Timing matters. Distributions go to everyone holding shares on the record date, however long they’ve owned them.¹ Buying just before a distribution can create a tax bill on gains the new investor never shared in.

“A distribution does not change the value of a shareholder’s investment. The fund’s share price drops by the amount paid out.”

These are estimates

Dimensional says its figures are preliminary and may change before the funds’ October 31, 2026 fiscal year-end, because of fund activity, fund accountant revisions and final tax adjustments. Any capital gain distributions will be paid in December, and supplemental distributions may be paid at the end of December if needed.¹  Dimensional’s fixed income estimates and qualified dividend income figures are expected in October.
